Join SAIS Peter G. Peterson Distinguished Scholar at the Henry A. Kissinger Center for Global Affairs John Lipsky for a conversation on geopolitics and geoeconomics in 2023 with the Honorable Paolo Gentiloni, European Commissioner for Economy and former Italian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister on April 13. Opening remarks will be provided by SAIS Associate Professor of International Political Economy Matthias Matthjis.

Early in his career, he spent 10 years at the International Monetary Fund helping manage the fund’s exchange rate surveillance procedure, analyzing developments in international capital markets, participating in negotiations with several member countries and serving as the fund’s resident representative in Chile. He currently co-chairs the Aspen Institute’s Program on the World Economy, and he is the Executive Director of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Dr. Lipsky received his PhD in Economics from Stanford University. 

 

The Honorable Paolo Gentiloni is the European Commissioner for Economy since December 2019. He previously served as Prime Minister of Italy (2016-2018), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (2014-2016), Member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs (2013-2014), and Minister of Communications (2006-2008).
 

He was formerly the Spokesperson for the Margherita Party (2002-2007), Chairman of the Broadcasting Services Watchdog Committee (2005-2006), and Spokesperson for the Mayor of Rome and Commissioner in the City of Rome (1993-2000). He also worked as a professional journalist.
 

Born in 1954, Commissioner Gentiloni graduated in Political Science from La Sapienza, Rome. His latest book is “La Sfida Impopulista” (the (Un)populist challenge).
 

Matthias Matthjis is the Associate Professor of International Political Economy at SAIS. His research focuses on the politics of economic crises, the role of economic ideas in economic policymaking, and the politics of regional integration. At SAIS, he teaches courses in international relations and comparative politics, and was twice awarded the Max M. Fisher Prize for Excellence in Teaching, in 2011 and 2015. He is also a Senior Fellow for Europe at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) and served as the Chair of the European Union Studies Association (EUSA) from 2019 to 2021.

 
He previously taught at American University’s School of International Service in Washington, D.C. from 2008 to 2012, and was a visiting assistant professor of international political economy at SAIS Europe in Bologna, Italy during the spring semester of 2010 and the academic year 2016-17. He has also served as a consultant for the World Bank’s Foreign Investment Advisory Service (FIAS) from 2005 to 2007 and for the Economist Intelligence Unit from 2009 to 2011. 
  
Dr. Matthijs received his BSc in applied economics from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, and his MA and PhD in international relations from Johns Hopkins University.
