Johns Hopkins SAIS to host the 4th annual CARI conference, “Matters of State: Politics, Governance, and Agency in China-Africa Engagement,” on Thursday, April 19-Friday, April 20, 2018

The two-day conference, “Matters of State: Politics, Governance, and Agency in China-Africa Engagement,” will be hosted by the China Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).
 
The fourth annual CARI conference will feature experts who will explore the geopolitical dynamics of the relationship between China and Africa. Daniel Large, an assistant professor at Central European University, will give the keynote address on “China’s New African Era: The Politics of Peace, Security and Development.”
 
Practitioners and scholars from leading institutions including Johns Hopkins SAIS, George Washington University, University of Oxford, Cornell University, London School of Economics, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and King’s College London will address a variety of topics including:

• An analysis of Chinese aid in Africa
• The role of China in Africa’s sustainable development
• Anti-Chinese populism in Africa
• Decision-making power and African agency in Chinese projects
• The outcomes of health diplomacy between Africa and China
