“Lights Out: The Risks of Climate and Natural Disaster Related Disruption to the Electrical Grid,” will be hosted by the Energy, Resources and Environment (ERE) Program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) on Thursday, April 27, 2017.
Natural disasters pose grave threats to the nation’s electrical grids and the ability to deliver reliable electricity to communities. Climate change, expanding populations, and insufficient diversification of sources make the energy future more unpredictable.
The Energy, Resources and Environment (ERE)-Swiss Re Practicum Team at Johns Hopkins SAIS will present their preliminary research findings on how the risk is evolving in the Pacific Northwest, including implications for reliability of the system and potential economic disruption.
Following the findings from the student practicum team, an expert panel will discuss the steps that various stakeholders in government and the utility and insurance industries are taking to understand the risks and respond to exposures.
