Johns Hopkins SAIS expert available to discuss U.S., China engagements in Africa as U.S. secretary of state embarks on Africa tour

EXPERT ADVISORY

As U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson takes his first official trip to Africa, Dr. Deborah Bräutigam, Director of the China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), is available to discuss China’s engagement in Africa and the impact on U.S. relations with African countries.

Bräutigam is a leading expert on China-Africa relations and regularly advises international agencies and governments on Chinese-African economic engagement.

The scholar is available to further discuss:

  • What is motivating China’s growing interests in Africa?
  • Who are the driving forces behind Chinese policy in Africa?
  • How is China specifically involved with the nations Secretary Tillerson will visit — including Chad, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Nigeria?
  • What are the security implications of China’s expanding military presence in some African countries?
  • As more Chinese manufacturing jobs move to Africa, what are the implications for the United States?
  • How can the U.S. compete with China’s economic engagement in Africa?

Bräutigam is the author of Will Africa Feed China? (Oxford University Press, 2015), The Dragon’s Gift: The Real Story of China in Africa (Oxford University Press, 2010), and numerous articles in academic journals. She has offered commentary to various media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Economist.
