Johns Hopkins SAIS expert available to discuss Brazil’s upcoming elections, political future following appeal ruling upholding conviction of ex-president

EXPERT ADVISORY

Following a Jan. 24 appeal ruling that upholds a corruption conviction against former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Dr. Riordan Roett, Director of the Latin American Studies Program at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), is available to discuss the implications for politics in Brazil ahead of the October elections.

Dr. Roett argues the appeals court decision raises the probability that the former president – known as Lula – may be barred from competing in the upcoming elections. However, the presidential hopeful retains additional appeal options, which the scholar believes Lula will likely pursue in the months ahead. Despite the corruption scandal, early polling indicates that the ex-president leads a crowded field of presidential candidates and he retains significant support among Brazil’s working class and members of the Workers Party (PT).

Dr. Roett is available to further discuss:

  • What is the current state of Brazil’s political climate?
  • What does the ruling against Lula mean for the future of his Worker’s Party (PT)?
  • Will the judicial ruling allow other candidates to make election gains – including candidate Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil’s right wing?
  • What are the broader implications for the Latin American country’s fight against corruption?
  •

A noted scholar, Dr. Roett has offered commentary on Latin America as cited in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Bloomberg, CBS News, Foreign Policy, and Voice of America.
