Johns Hopkins SAIS and FREE launch collaboration on technology, electricity, and climate

Top graduate school of international relations and leading international non-profit institution on clean energy and environment establish unique initiative to foster research collaboration on key issues at the intersection of technology, electricity, and climate change
Washington, D.C.; New York – The Energy, Resources and Environment program (ERE) at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and the Foundation for Renewable Energy and Environment (FREE), have finalized an agreement to establish a Technology, Electricity and Climate (TEC) initiative.
Policies, technology, and customers are driving a dramatic transformation of the global electricity industry. In response, utilities, technology companies, regulators, governments, and customers are deploying new technologies, and adopting or experimenting with new partnerships, business models, and regulatory approaches in real time. Given the scale and pace of the changes underway, as well as their implications for long-term sustainability, there is a need for a dedicated focus on the challenges and opportunities emerging in the technology-electricity-climate nexus.
Leveraging the respective interests and strengths of FREE and SAIS/ERE, the TEC initiative will analyze strategies to achieve low-carbon, sustainable electricity, both domestically and internationally. The initiative will involve research, convening of experts, strategic communication and outreach. As the collaboration progresses, the focus is expected to expand into other rapidly changing and critical energy sectors.
As part of the new collaboration, Johns Hopkins SAIS is very pleased to welcome John Byrne as a Visiting Scholar in the ERE program. Byrne is also the President of FREE.
