JHU SAIS to Co-Host Conference on Use of Multilateral Tools to Fight Terrorism Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge to Give Keynote Address
The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will co-host a two-day conference, "Transatlantic Relations: How Do We Make the U.N. and Multilateralism Effective?" on Monday, 09/13 and Tuesday, 09/14.
Hosted by the Center for Transatlantic Relations at SAIS, the Luxembourg University Center, the Geneva Graduate Institute of International Studies and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the conference will focus on multilateralism mechanisms to fight terror and face global and strategic challenges.
Tom Ridge, secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, will give the conference's keynote address on "Transatlantic Homeland Security" at noon on Monday, 09/13. Other participants include Asa Hutchinson, under secretary for Border and Transportation Security at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Gijs de Vries, the European Union's coordinator for Counterterrorism, and experts from the United States and Europe. The conference is part of a series on "International Cooperation and Conflict in the Post-09/11 World," organized by the Luxembourg Group with the support of the Grand Duke Henri de Luxembourg, the head of state. The Grand Duke will be attending the conference. Luxembourg is a member of NATO and, in January, will assume the rotating presidency of the European Union Council.
The United States disagreed with some of its closest allies over the role of multilateral mechanisms, including the U.N., in grappling with Iraq. The two-day conference will address how and whether multilateral mechanisms can be made more effective tools for addressing strategic and economic issues from combating terrorism, managing the global economy, to saving failing states and preventing conflict. What is the role of the United Nations or the European Union?
The Monday, 09/13 session will be held at the Woodrow Wilson Center, located at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, 1300 Pennsylvania, Ave., N.W. The Tuesday, 09/14 session will be held at SAIS's Kenney Auditorium, 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W.
