Beginning 11/19/2018, Students who have third-party payers  - outside organizations paying all or part of their tuition - must now log into SIS Self Service to upload documents and complete a brief acknowledgment form. To help you in planning for the costs associated with your education, tuition charges, fees, and due dates for the upcoming academic year are outlined for each program. The budget amounts listed are determined by the Dean of Finance and approved by the Board of Trustees.  Please note that tuition is expected to increase between 3-6% each year.

Billing is by semester, and account statements are emailed the second Thursday of each month.  You must pay the term tuition and fees in full by the posted due date. Financial alerts will be added to your account after the due date restricting your ability to register.  A late fee of $200.00 may be applied to accounts with outstanding balances.  
 
SIS Self-Service allows students to view their bills, account history, make online payments, set up authorized payer access, and view 1098t documents (if applicable).  Paper bills will not be mailed to enrolled students. You may access the Self-Service website at https://sis.jhu.edu/sswf/Default.aspx.

  • Tuition for Fall 2019 MA/MAIA/MIPP/Diploma is due : September 20, 2019
  • Tuition for Spring 2019 MAGR/MA/MAIA/MIPP/Diploma is due : January 31, 2020

Students also pay a student government fee of €40 & a one-time $500 matriculation fee.

How to pay tuition 

Please remember that if you received financial aid, only half of it can be used towards your fall tuition (the difference will be applied in the spring.
 
All fees payable to SAIS Europe should be in Euro. Those who wish to pay in U.S. dollars may do so by using the exchange rate on the date they make their payment (when converting dollars to euro internally, JHU uses a rate that is the www.oanda.com interbank rate plus 1%). The same method can be used when initiating a bank transfer to JHU. It is important to note that due to exchange rate fluctuations between the time a funds transfer is initiated and the time these funds are credited to JHU, the amount required to cover tuition may decrease or increase slightly. A reconciliation transaction will be made once the student arrives in Bologna, and the student will be notified in the event they have a small positive or negative balance. Questions regarding payments or exchange rates should be addressed to the SAIS Europe Business Office at: sais.eu.business@jhu.edu.

In the case of tuition payments, if a transfer has not arrived before the deadline, you will need to provide proof of the incoming payment. A late payment fee of Euro 150 may be assessed if payment is received after the due date.

Tuition Refunds

Johns Hopkins University students may be eligible to receive refunds resulting from credit balances in their student accounts. In response to requests from these students to provide more flexible options for receiving financial aid refunds, the University completed an assessment of outside vendors and selected BankMobile. BankMobile offers students the opportunity to receive their refunds in one of two ways: direct deposit into an existing personal bank account or direct deposit into a new checking account (with an associated debit card) with BankMobile. **Please note that refunds of credit card payments made within 90 days will be refunded back to the card that prompted the over-payment first. If the over-payment was caused by a check payment, 30 days must pass before a refund will be issued.**

A student may be due a partial refund if he or she voluntarily withdraws from the school.  The withdrawal date is calculated from the date on which the student submits his or her written statement of withdrawal to the associate dean for Student Affairs with copies to the Financial Aid, Registrar and Business Office.  Please see below for the Refund Policy for the school:

The IRS Form 1098‐T is an informational document The Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (JHU SAIS) issues to eligible students. For further information regarding the 1098-T, please consult your tax advisor, or refer to the following IRS links:

Neither JHU SAIS nor the JHU Tax Office can answer tax questions or advise you concerning tax related issues.


1. Who is eligible to receive an IRS Form 1098‐T?
JHU SAIS files a 1098‐T form for each eligible enrolled student for whom a reportable transaction was made during the calendar year January 1 to December 31. A reportable transaction is defined as payment for qualified tuition and fees required for a student to enroll or attend an eligible educational institution, and any scholarships or grants administered and processed for payment of the student’s cost of attendance. (Please note, prior to 2018, reportable transactions were defined as charges for qualified tuition and fees.)

2. Who is NOT eligible to receive the IRS Form 1098‐T?

  • Students enrolled in courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program.
  • Non-resident alien students.
  • Students whose qualified tuition and fees are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships and/or other formal billing arrangements between an institution and the student’s employer, government entity, including the Department of Veterans Affairs or the Department of Defense, or other third party sponsor .
  • If you do not have a valid social security number and are not a non-resident alien student, a notification was sent to you through email notifying you that you need to update your social security number.  To update the social security number, please provide the necessary documentation to the JHU SAIS Registrar's Office by December 15th.

3. Does JHU SAIS report my payments?
JHU SAIS reports qualified payments in Box 1 of the 1098‐T form. The University reports payment amounts for qualified tuition and fees during the calendar year January 1st through December 31st. To get a summary of your charges and payments by term, you can view and print your account activity in https://sis.jhu.edu/sswf/Please look closely at the dates of activity.
 
4. How does a student receive IRS Form 1098‐T from JHU SAIS?

  • Your 1098-T form will be mailed for the appropriate tax year. You can also access the form electronically by logging into your self-service account at https://sis.jhu.edu/sswf/. Select: Billing>Summary or Billing>Statements tab and click the “View 1098-T” link. SAIS Europe students may access the link from the Personal>Summary tab in SIS.
  • If you would like to access/receive your 1098-T form electronically, please click the consent button at the bottom of the page once you have been redirected to the 1098-T site.
  • If you need assistance, please contact your Student Accounts Office at saisbilling@jhu.edu.

Tuition Due Dates

Financial Aid may only be available to certificate students. US citizens or eligible noncitizens may receive Federal Student Aid. Students will need to apply for the FAFSA and meet the following criteria:
Students must have an enrollment status of at least "Half-time" in order to qualify for financial aid. 

  • For fall & spring terms this equals 8 credits (generally the equivalent of 2 classes)
  • For summer term this equals 4 credits (generally the equivalent of 1 class)

Refunds 
Tuition is refundable only when the student submits an Add/Drop form to the Office of Summer Programs during the Add/Drop period. Please note that the application fee and 10% deposit on tuition are non-refundable. Refund amounts will be determined by the date and time the form is submitted according to the schedule listed below.

  • Before 2pm on June 10: 90%
  • Between 2pm on June 11 and 2pm on June 12: 50%
  • After 2pm on June 12: No tuition will be refunded

Alumni Discount
Alumni from the school’s degree programs, SAIS Europe Diploma or Hopkins Nanjing Certificate receive a 30% tuition discount on summer courses.
