About
Toni Weis is a Senior Program Officer at the Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE), where he leads the Africa department’s work stream on business advocacy. In this capacity, he helps private-sector organizations from Ethiopia to Senegal to organize effectively and advocate convincingly, enabling them and their members to break down barriers to growth. Prior to joining CIPE, he worked as a consultant for the World Bank, risk analysis firms, and private investors.
Toni’s research focuses on the political economy of Ethiopia, as well as on private-sector development in Africa more generally. In addition to his affiliation with SAIS, Toni is also a research associate at the University of Oxford’s Global Economic Governance Group, where he is part of a multi-country study on financial regulation in Africa. His work has been published in Foreign Affairs, Africa Confidential, the China Economic Review, the Journal of Southern African Studies, and other academic and news media. Toni holds a DPhil in Politics from the University of Oxford, an MSc in African Studies (Oxford, with distinction), and an MA in International Relations from Sciences Po Paris.
