Former U.S. Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin to Speak at JHU SAIS Commencement

Robert E. Rubin, former secretary of the Treasury, will speak at the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) commencement on Thursday, 05/26 at 3 p.m.

Having headed the Treasury Department during the Clinton administration, Rubin is currently a director, chairman of the Executive Committee and member of the Office of the Chairman of Citigroup, Inc., in New York.

Rubin has been involved with financial markets and the nation's public policy debate his entire professional life. He began his career in finance at Goldman, Sachs & Company in New York in 1966, rising to co-senior partner and co-chairman, positions he held from 1990 to 1992.

In 1993, he left the private sector to join the Clinton White House, first serving as assistant to the president for Economic Policy and directing the activities of the National Economic Council. In 01/1995, Rubin became the nation's 70th secretary of the Treasury, a post that he held until 07/1999. He played a leading role in many of the nation's most important policy debates, including opening trade policy to further globalization and acting to stem financial crises in Asia, Mexico and Russia.

Admittance to the ceremony is by invitation only but will be open to the media for coverage. Graduation will be held in DAR Constitution Hall, 18th and D Streets, N.W., Washington, D.C. Media should use the 18th Street entrance to the hall. Reserved seating for reporters will be available in balcony tiers L/M directly facing the stage.

SAIS is one of the country's leading graduate schools devoted to the study of international relations. The Washington, D.C., campus is located on Massachusetts Avenue in the city's Dupont Circle neighborhood and enrolls more than 450 full-time graduate students and mid-career professionals. SAIS has trained more than 11,000 alumni in all aspects of international affairs. During the graduation ceremony, SAIS will confer graduate degrees upon more than 445 students.
