California Congressman Tom Lantos to Speak at JHU SAIS

Congressman Tom Lantos (D.-Calif.) will speak at the Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) on Monday, 02/14 at 4 p.m.

Lantos, the ranking Democratic member of the House International Relations Committee, will speak about "Is Libya the Future of North Korea?"

He recently returned from a ground-breaking stay in reclusive North Korea, where he discussed human rights and the stalled Six-Party Talks on nuclear nonproliferation with top government officials. In 2004, Lantos was the first high-ranking U.S. authority to make an official visit to Libya in nearly three decades. He embarked on the trip just after Tripoli agreed to give up its pursuit of nuclear weapons, and learned directly from Libyan leader Moammar Kadhafi why the country was ready to cooperate with the West. After this first trip, Lantos returned to Libya twice last year for further discussions, and he remains engaged in U.S.-Libyan relations.
