JHU SAIS to Hold Discussion on the Meaning of Sports

The Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a forum, "The Meaning of Sports," on Tuesday, 05/4 from noon to 1 p.m.

This event will feature a discussion of The Meaning of Sports: Why Americans Watch Baseball, Football, and Basketball and What They See When They Do, a new book written by Michael Mandelbaum, Christian A. Herter Professor and director of the American Foreign Policy Program at SAIS, to be published by Public Affairs.

Mandelbaum will make some introductory remarks, followed by a panel discussion featuring:

Philip Merrill (moderator), president and chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States

Phil Chenier , Comcast SportsNet television commentator for the Washington Wizards and former Washington Bullets guard

Jack Kemp , co-founder of Empower America, former secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former Buffalo Bills quarterback

Peter Magowan , president and managing general partner of the San Francisco Giants baseball team

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the school's Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., in Washington, D.C.
