Peter has spent approximately three decades on addressing the water challenges in the agricultural, environment and health sectors. This has included policy and strategy development, planning and management, implementation, teaching, research and capacity building. He has worked throughout North America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East including long-term assignments in Colorado, Alberta, Washington DC, the UK, Ethiopia, Eritrea, India, Indonesia, Jordan and Sri Lanka.

In his present role, which he assumed in 2008, he leads the water program at the Nicholas Institute to provide strategic knowledge and advice in meeting complex water challenges. Before joining Duke University he was the Asia Director for the International Water Management Institute, and prior to that he was seconded to the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) in Washington DC as Senior Water Resources and Irrigation Advisor.

He has a PhD and MS in water resources and irrigation engineering from Colorado State University, and a BSc in agricultural engineering from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the UK. He is a registered Civil Engineer in Colorado, and a member of the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers (AAWRE).
