About
Andrew Rys is a PhD candidate in the International Political Economy department at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). Most recently, he worked as a special assistant to the Director of the International Finance division at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve. He earned both his MA (International Relations and International Economics) and BA (Economics and Philosophy) from Johns Hopkins University. He has held a variety of other private- and public-sector positions ranging from economic policy to economic consulting.
Broadly, his research interests are in the politics of money and finance with a particular focus on the politics of financial stability and regulatory policy. His dissertation project attempts to explain cross-country variation in the regulatory responses to the vulnerabilities associated with foreign currency-denominated liabilities. In his teaching at Johns Hopkins SAIS, which includes courses in both international economics and mathematics, he emphasizes the combination of formal modeling with historical-contextual detail to offer a richer understanding of international economic activity.
