About the Hopkins-Nanjing Center
The Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies (HNC) opened in 1986 as a one-of-a-kind educational collaboration between The Johns Hopkins University and Nanjing University. Located on the downtown campus of Nanjing University, the center upholds the highest American and Chinese academic standards in the pursuit of educating future leaders.

- JHU President Steven Muller and NJU President Kuang Yaming begin talks to create a center in Nanjing
- Construction begins on HNC's original building
- HNC opens under leadership of American Co-Director Leon Slawecki
- Reverend Billy Graham speaks to center students
- First certificate class graduates
- Center graduate Milo Manley joins HNC staff
- Academic year ends early due to Tiananmen Square student protests
- 1990's
- Initial five-year partnership renewed by Johns Hopkins and Nanjing universities
- HNC class of 1992-93 kicks off the academic year

- President George H.W. Bush visits HNC and receives NJU honorary degree
