What is Satisfactory Academic Progress? Students who receive Federal Student Aid – must in accordance with federal requirements – maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP), to retain Federal financial aid. The financial aid office is responsible for monitoring aid recipients to ensure that they are meeting the policy. What is the SAP Policy for SAIS? To receive financial aid at SAIS, students must show progress towards their degree. This is measured as follows: - Students must maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 2.67 (4.0 scale)
- Financial aid recipients must complete all courses for which aid is awarded and complete a minimum of 2 courses per semester for which aid is received.
- Students must also complete required course work within the number of years established for each established program. (MA/MIPP/PhD)
Withdrawal and Incomplete Courses: A grade of “Incomplete (I)” is treated as an unfinished course for SAP monitoring purposes until a final grade is recorded. Financial aid recipients must complete all courses for which aid is awarded. Students, who plan to withdraw from a course, should contact the financial aid office to determine the impact on their financial aid. How often is SAP reviewed? SAP is reviewed on a yearly basis during the summer, regardless of the number of semesters attended. Notification Students will be notified in writing by the financial aid office if they have not met SAP and will be placed on probation for a period of one semester. After the probationary period, students will be ineligible for aid if they have not re-established their eligibility. Reestablishing Eligibility for Aid Students who lose financial aid eligibility because of unsatisfactory Academic progress may regain eligibility by raising their cumulative GPA to the minimum standard of 2.67. Appealing Cancellation of Aid Students may appeal the denial of financial aid by writing to the financial aid committee. Appeals will be reviewed by the office of Financial Aid in consultation with the Office of Academic Affairs. Appeal decisions are final All appeals should include: - The grounds of appeal
- Plans to rectify current academic status
Circumstances considered for Appeals - Serious illness or injury to student
- Death of a student’s immediate family member
- Other unusual circumstances documented by the financial aid office and/or other school administrators
