Financial Aid | Fellowship and Scholarship Opportunities

MAJOR FELLOWSHIPS

  • NEW for 2012-2013 Deans Fellowships - Open to U.S. students and non-U.S. students with a passion for public service. Deans fellows will be expected to propose and plan a leadership project to benefit SAIS, other students or its mission. Students should express interest in this fellowship in their application for admission to SAIS. Click here for more information.
  • Max M. Fisher Fellowship - Established in 2007 by Johns Hopkins University Trustee Marjorie M. Fisher in honor of her father, Max M. Fisher, for an academically exceptional and needy student. The fellowship is intended to perpetuate Mr. Fisher's legacy as a leader in foreign affairs by providing assistance to students demonstrating their commitment to making a positive difference around the world. The fellowship amount is $40,000.
  • Forster Family Foundation Fellowship - Open to U.S. students only. Established by Peter and Elizabeth Forster, parents of Peter J. Forster, SAIS’91 (M.A.), and Catherine Forster Connolly, SAIS’95 (M.A.), this two-year award supports a promising M.A. candidate from the United States. Mr. Forster is chairman and CEO of Clark Construction Group LLC, based in Bethesda, Md. Amount is $37,500.
  • Priscilla Mason Fellowship - Established in 1995 by Priscilla Mason, one of the founding administrators of SAIS and a former member of the SAIS Advisory Council, to support students intending to pursue a career in U.S. government service. Applicants must be in need of financial aid, a U.S. citizen, and a first-year SAIS M.A. student willing to accept the terms and conditions of the Priscilla Mason Fund. The Mason Fund Fellowship, full tuition for two years. (APPLICATION REQUIRED) See here.
  • Sunrise Fellowship - For a student from the Middle East who wants to promote understanding between the East and the West (Palestine preferred). ($35,000) for Two Years 

Fellowship Opportunities Requiring Individual Applications for Current and Incoming Students
Students may apply directly for these fellowships, some of which are awarded by SAIS and some of which are awarded by external institutions. Please click on the name of each fellowship for application information.

  • Morris Abrams Award - Established in 1968, the Morris Abrams Award benefits Ph.D. candidates at graduate schools of international affairs, political science or journalism.
  • The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans - Established in established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.
  • DACOR Bacon House Foundation Fellowship - Established in 1979 by the Diplomatic and Consular Officers, Retired (DACOR) Foundation, the fellowship provides assistance for a student pursuing a better understanding of U.S. foreign policy.
  • Helene de Beir Fellowship - Established in 2005 by Francis de Beir in memory of his daughter Helene de Beir, SAIS 1999 (M.A.), following her tragic murder while on a humanitarian mission in Afghanistan with Medecins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders). The fellowship supports women from Islamic countries who are pursuing a career in humanitarian affairs.
  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Fellowship - Established in 2006 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the Global Health Initiative at SAIS. The fellowship supports students pursuing a joint degree at SAIS and The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. (not being offered for Fall 2012)
  • Joint Japan/World Bank Scholarship - Established in 1987 by the World Bank and Government of Japan, the scholarship benefits students from developing countries pursuing studies related to economic development.
  • Priscilla Mason Fellowship - Established in 1995 by Priscilla Mason, one of the founding administrators of SAIS and a former member of the SAIS Advisory Council, to support students intending to pursue a career in U.S. government service.
  • Philip Merrill Fellowship - The contest is open to U.S. citizens who are new applicants to the two-year M.A. program at SAIS for the 2012-2013 academic year.
  • Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Graduate Fellowship - Established as a collaborative effort between Howard University and the U.S. Department of State, this fellowship program provides annual support to students completing a two-year master's degree in international affairs or a related subject at a graduate or professional school. Fellows must successfully complete the Rangel Program and Foreign Service entry requirements.
  • Dr. George M. Santangelo Fellowship - Established in 2005, the fellowship benefits students applying to the M.A. program who will be attending the Bologna Center in their first year. Preference is given to students from families of members or alumni of the Alpha Phi Delta fraternity, students who are Italian-American, and students from Southern Italy, in that order.
  • Dorothy Marchus Senesh Fellowship - Established by The International Peace Research Association Foundation, the fellowship supports women from Developing World countries applying to the M.A. program.   • U.S.-Korea Institute Fellowship - Established in 2006 by the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, the fellowship supports students who demonstrate a strong interest in Korea Studies.
  • Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation Fellowship - Provides deserving students the opportunity to benefit from a SAIS education as part of its mission to empower future generation and devise sustainable home-grown solutions to regional challenges.   • W.W. Norton & Company 9/11 Commission Report Fellowship - Established in 2005 by W.W. Norton & Company, publisher of the authorized version of The 9/11 Commission Report, the fellowship supports two students, one American and one student from a predominantly Muslim country, who will pursue careers in promoting international understanding and preventing terrorism.
  • Pat Tillman Foundation Opens Military Scholarship Applications - Scholarships will be awarded to veteran and active service members from both pre- and post-9/11 tours of duty and their dependants who are seeking higher education. Deadline: March 16, 2012

Special Sponsored Fellowship Programs

SAIS participates in matching agreements with the external sponsors listed below. This list reflects the minimum match required as per our agreement with each program. SAIS makes every effort to exceed the minimum fellowship up to full tuition. Fellowships will be granted on a competitive basis, with amounts subject to availability of funds.

  • For Hungarian Students - The HAESF Graduate Scholarship provides:
    • up to $25,000 per year for a maximum of 3 years to support degrees that lead to professional occupations
    • up to 1yearof funding for professional, post-graduate, non-degree, certificate-granting programs, such as advanced studies in music and the arts

SAIS CLASS Fellowships - DEADLINE - AUGUST 30, 2012

  • SAIS Class of 2007 Fellowship - Established by members of the Class of 2007 upon their graduation, the fellowship is awarded to a member of the graduating class of 2011 who has demonstrated academic excellence, financial need and has contributed to the life of the school.   • SAIS Class of 2008 Fellowship - Established by the members of the Class of 2008 upon their graduation, the fellowship is awarded to a current SAIS master's degree student in his or her first of second year who has demonstrated financial need, is a citizen of a developing country and has demonstrated interest in sustainability, the environment or other related fields. The named fellowships below have been established through the generosity of alumni and friends of SAIS. Applicants need only submit one financial aid request form to the Office of Financial Aid by the deadline of March 15 to be considered for these awards.

  • Alexandra Allred Fellowship - Established in 2002 by William B. Allred in honor of his mother, the fund provides assistance to an international student. Mr. Allred works at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
  • Paul C. Alter Memorial Fellowship - Established in 1988 for M.A. candidates in African Studies by a bequest from Mr. Alter, SAIS 1981 (M.A.), who had been SAIS Director of Alumni, Government, and Public Affairs.
  • William E. and Marion P. Altschuh Fellowship - Established in 1997 by Gregory Altschuh, A&S 1968, SAIS 1969 (M.A.), in honor of his parents, for one academically-exceptional and financially-needy M.A. candidate. Mr. Altschuh is currently special counsel to Diageo North America, Inc.
  • Ambassador Cresencio S. Arcos Fellowship - Established by Ambassador Arcos, SAIS 1973 (M.A.), to provide tuition support to an outstanding M.A. candidate, preferably a U.S. citizen of Hispanic origin. Ambassador Arcos served as U.S. ambassador to Honduras from 1989 to 1993.
  • Association of Italian American Charities Dr. Frank C. Marino Memorial Scholarship - First awarded in 1982 by the Associated Italian American Charities of Maryland and designated in 1993 to honor Dr. Marino of Baltimore, MD. The scholarship is given to a second-year student, with preference given to those of Italian-American descent.
  • Sara Lamport Azrael Fellowship - Established in 1989 by friends and family of Mrs. Azrael, the fellowship benefits one student concentrating in African Studies.
  • J. Michael Barrett Almon Fellowship - Established by J. Michael Barrett, SAIS’01 (M.A.), and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, this two-year fellowship will support an exceptional M.A. candidate in the Strategic Studies program.  Mr. Barrett is a security and risk management expert and former strategy director of the White House’s National Security Council.
  • Lucius D. Battle Endowed Fellowship - Established in 1984 for students in Middle East Studies by friends of Lucius D. Battle, former ambassador to the United Arab Republic (Egypt) and the first Chairman of the Johns Hopkins Foreign Policy Institute. Now retired, he also served as president of the Middle East Institute and on the SAIS Advisory Council.
  • Nicholas B. Binkley Fellowship - Established in 2000 by Nicholas B. Binkley, SAIS 1971 (M.A.), a member of the SAIS Advisory Council, the fund provides financial support for a student from the People's Republic of China.
  • Conrad Black Fellowship - Established in 1999 by an anonymous donor, the fellowship benefits one student in honor of Conrad Black, former chairman and CEO of Hollinger, Inc. The fellowship supports a student concentrating in Middle East or Strategic Studies.
  • Jacob Blaustein Fellowship - Established in 1974 by family members in memory of Mr. Blaustein for students concentrating in International Relations. Mr. Blaustein, a Baltimore industrialist, statesman, and philanthropist, was an early advocate of the United Nations. The scholarship recognizes his commitment to international affairs.
  • Michael R. Bloomberg Fellowship - Established in 1995 by an anonymous donor in honor of Michael R. Bloomberg, WSE 1964, past chairman of the Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees, to support M.A. candidates at SAIS in Washington, D.C. and at the Bologna Center.
  • Broze Almon Fellowship - Established by Vincent Broze, SAIS’71 (M.A.), and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, this two-year fellowship supports an exceptional M.A. candidate concentrating in Middle East Studies.
  • Douglas G. Carlston Fellowship - Established in 2003 by Douglas G. Carlston, SAIS 1971 (M.A.), and SAIS Advisory Council member, the fund supports a student with a background in international volunteer work.
  • Robert K. Carr Endowed Fellowship - Established in 1992 by Robert C. Carr, SAIS 1964 (M.A.), parent of Deborah Carr, SAIS 1992 (M.A.), and former member of the SAIS Advisory Council. The fellowship honors his father, an author, scholar, and educator, and it supports one academically-exceptional student concentrating in Energy, Resources and Environment.
  • Roger Amedee Chaufournier Fellowship - Established in 1995 by Stephanie S. Chaufournier, SAIS 1998 (M.A.), and her family in honor of her father, whose 32-year career at the World Bank and work on development issues in West Africa represents an outstanding model of public service. Ms. Chaufournier is executive vice president and general manager at Online Resources Corporation. The fellowship benefits one academically-exceptional student from Africa.
  • Aldus H. Chapin Fellowship - Established in 2010 by family and friends in memory of Aldus Higgins Chapin, SAIS’53 (M.A.), former assistant dean of SAIS (1961-68), to support an academically exceptional and financially-needy student in the African Studies Program at SAIS.
  • Chung Ju Yung Fellowship - Established in 1995 for students in international business and economics by University trustee Chung Mong Joon, SAIS 1986 (M.A.), 1993 (Ph.D.), and the Hyundai Group in honor of his father, the founder and honorary chairman of the Hyundai Group. Chung Ju Yung received an honorary doctorate from Johns Hopkins in 1995. Chung Mong Joon is currently a National Assembly member in Korea.
  • John W. Creighton Jr. Fellowship - Established in 1999 by John W. Creighton III, SAIS 1988 (M.A.), an attorney with White & Case, in honor of his father. The fellowship benefits one SAIS student.
  • George L. Crowell Fellowship - Established in 1995 by family and friends in memory of George L. Crowell, SAIS 1974 (M.A.), who served as Associate Dean of SAIS from 1976 until his death in 1995. The fellowship supports one student who exemplifies Dean Crowell's dedication and leadership.
  • Leonard and Emily Dalsemer Foundation Fellowship - Established in 1976 by Mr. Dalsemer, A&S 1928, retired president of the International Paper Company, and his wife, to provide general fellowship assistance. Mr. Dalsemer was a University trustee (1959-1965) and a SAIS Advisory Council member.
  • Luc de Smet Leadership Fellowship - Established in 2006 by Laurence Franklin of the Morris S. Smith Foundation and supported by Mieke Sprimont de Smet and Steven Haas, SAIS 1972 (M.A.), in memory of Luc de Smet, SAIS 1971 (M.A.). Mr. de Smet worked to improve the lives of refugees with the UN High Commission on Refugees and the Belgian government. The fund supports one international student from the Bologna Center who exhibits exceptional leadership qualities.
  • George Dickover Fellowship - Established by an anonymous donor, the fellowship supports one academically-exceptional student.
  • Paul Dickson and Susan Fitzgerald Fellowship - Established in 2000 by Paul Dickson, SAIS 1993 (M.A. ), and Susan Fitzgerald, SAIS 1992 (M.A.). The fund supports one academically-exceptional and financially-needy student.
  • Herbert Dinerstein Almon Fellowship - Established by Kate Tomlinson, SAIS’79 (M.A.), and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, in honor of her former advisor, this two-year fellowship will support an exceptional M.A. candidate at SAIS.
  • Joseph C. DiProspero and Elizabeth Fusco Fellowship - Established in 1996 by London residents Mr. DiProspero, SAIS 1980 (M.A.), and his wife, Ms. Fusco, to provide support for students interested in technology and environmental issues. Mr. DiProspero is an executive with Financial Security Assurance.
  • Peter and Janie Drittel Fellowship - Established in 1996 for students in Latin America, Southeast Asia, or China Studies. Mr. Drittel, SAIS 1984 (M.A.), was among the first to graduate from the SAIS joint degree program with Wharton Business School. He currently serves as an executive with Diamondback Capital Management.
  • Betty Cole Dukert Fellowship - Established in 2005 by Joseph M. Dukert, BC 1956, SAIS 1993 (M.A.), 2005 (Ph.D), of Bethesda, Maryland in honor of his wife, Betty Cole Dukert. Ms. Dukert retired as Executive Producer of NBC News' Meet the Press, the world's longest running television news program, after 40 years with NBC.
  • Virginia Linthicum Dukert Fellowship - Established in 1996 by Joseph M. Dukert, BC 1956, SAIS 1993 (M.A.), 2005 (Ph.D.), to honor the memory of his first wife, who encouraged him to apply to SAIS in the early 1950's. The fellowship supports a student concentrating in Energy, Resources and Environment.
  • Max M. Fisher Fellowship - Established in 2007 by Johns Hopkins University Trustee Marjorie M. Fisher in honor of her father, Max M. Fisher. The fellowship is intended to perpetuate Mr. Fisher's legacy as a leader in foreign affairs, by providing assistance to students demonstrating their commitment to making a positive difference around the world.
  • Todd and Christine Fisher Fellowship - Established in 1998 by Mr. Fisher, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), and his wife to support students planning international careers in public service, including positions with government and nonprofit organizations and in teaching. Mr. Fisher is an executive with Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts, and Company.
  • Pamela and Peter Flaherty Fellowship - Established in 1995 by Pam Flaherty, SAIS 1968 (M.A.), a Johns Hopkins University trustee and member of the SAIS Advisory Council, and her husband, Peter Flaherty, BC 1967, SAIS 1968 (M.A.), chair of the SAIS Advisory Council. The fellowship benefits one academically-exceptional student. Mr. Flaherty is managing director of Arcon Partners LLC and Mrs. Flaherty is an executive with Citigroup.
  • Philip Manning Foisie Fellowship - Established in 1997 by Timothy V.T. Foisie, SAIS 1995 (M.A.), and his family in memory of his father, Philip Foisie, who is credited as "the father of foreign coverage for The Washington Post." Under his guidance, the paper won two Pulitzer Prizes for overseas reporting. Timothy Foisie is an executive with Price Waterhouse. The fellowship supports students with an interest in journalism.
  • Forster Family Foundation Fellowship - Established by Peter and Elizabeth Forster, parents of Peter J. Forster, SAIS’91 (M.A.), and Catherine Forster Connolly, SAIS’95 (M.A.), this two-year award supports a promising M.A. candidate from the United States.  Mr. Forster is chairman and CEO of Clark Construction Group LLC, based in Bethesda, Md.
  • Franklin M. Berger Almon Fellowship - Established by Franklin Berger, KSAS’71, BC’72, SAIS’72 (M.A.), and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, to support an exceptional M.A. candidate.  Mr. Berger is a biotechnology industry analyst with over 25 years of experience in capital markets and financial analysis.
  • Cole Frates Almon Fellowship - The Frates Almon Fellowship was established by D. Cole Frates, BC’94, SAIS’95 (M.A.),  and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, this two-year fellowship will support an exceptional M.A. candidate in the Energy, Resources and Environment (ERE) Program.  Mr. Frates is the co-founder and president of Hydrogen Car Company based in California.
  • Nicholas Forstmann Fellowship - Established in 1999 by an anonymous donor, the fellowship benefits one student in honor of Nicholas Forstmann, founding partner of Forstmann Little & Company.
  • Theodore Forstmann Fellowship - Established in 1999 by an anonymous donor, the fellowship benefits one student in honor of Theodore Forstmann, founding partner of Forstmann Little & Company.
  • Dulaney and Wendy Glen Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Robert M. Glen, SAIS 1987 (M.A.), to benefit one student in honor of his parents. Mr. Glen is an executive with Prudential Securities.
  • Donald P. Gregg Fellowship in Foreign Policy - Established in 2007 by an anonymous donor, the fellowship benefits two students exhibiting extraordinary professional promise while adhering to the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Donald Gregg's distinguished career has included service as U.S. Ambassador to Korea and more than 30 years at the Central Intelligence Agency.
  • Aziza Ghori Almon Fellowship - Established by Amjad Ghori, SAIS’86 (M.A.), and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, this two-year fellowship will support an exceptional M.A. candidate at SAIS.
  • Enzo Grilli Memorial Fellowship - Established in 2007 by Assicurazioni Generali and the friends and former students of Professor Enzo Grilli, BC 1968, SAIS 1975 (Ph.D.), the fellowship supports an Italian student with a strong background in economics in Bologna and in Washington. Professor Grilli, who passed away in 2006, taught at SAIS for 30 years and also had a distinguished career working for international organizations, the Italian government and several Italian universities.
  • Eliza Struve and Isabel Sproul Hensel Fellowship - Established in 1985 by H. Struve Hensel, Assistant Secretary of Defense in the early 1950's, in honor of his mother and his wife, both of whom are deceased. The fellowship benefits two academically-exceptional students. Mr. Hensel died in 1991.
  • Laurence Hirsch Fellowship - Established in 2006 by Laurence E. Hirsch, SAIS 2005 (M.I.P.P.), a member of the SAIS Advisory Council and chairman of the Center for European Policy Analysis. The fund supports academically-exceptional students from Eastern Europe.
  • Fred Holborn Fellowship - Established in 2005 by friends and family in memory of Frederick L. Holborn, senior adjunct professor of American foreign policy at SAIS. The fellowship supports a student concentrating in American Foreign Policy.
  • Mark Dewing Hommes Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Mark Dewing Hommes, SAIS 1983 (M.A.), a vice president at Chase Securities, Inc. Preference is given to students concentrating in Latin American Studies.
  • G. Donald Johnston Jr. Fellowship - Established in 1982 by the J. Walter Thompson Company in honor of Mr. Johnston, SAIS 1952 (M.A.), former SAIS Advisory Council chairman, on his 30th anniversary with the company. The fellowship provides support for students pursuing Latin American Studies.
  • Sarita and Don Johnston Fellowship - Established by G. Donald Johnston, Jr.,  SAIS’52 (M.A.), and his wife, Sarita, to support an exceptional student from Latin America, preferably from Colombia.  Mr. Johnston is a former Johns Hopkins University trustee emeritus and former chair of the SAIS Advisory Council.
  • Jorie and Michael Jurgens Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Marijke M. Jurgens-Dupree, SAIS 1992 (M.A.), and David Dupree, for a student of international affairs. Mrs. Jurgens-Dupree was most recently an executive with Iridium L.L.C. Mr. Dupree is a managing partner with The Halifax Group.
  • Kearney and Haliv Family Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Tom Kearney, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), with preference given to students from the Ukraine and other countries of the former Soviet Union.
  • Myra and Jerold Kempler Fellowship - Established in 1996 by Lee S. Kempler, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), to support one student in recognition of his parents' "loving support each step of the way." Lee Kempler is a partner with McKinsey and Company.
  • Lea Kenig Fellowship - Established in 2001 by Dr. Paul Wolfowitz, former Dean of SAIS, to honor Dr. Lea Kenig, a former SAIS faculty member. The fund was established to support an exceptional student with an interest in public service. Additional preference is given to Vassar College alumni.
  • W. John Kenney Memorial Fellowship - Established in 1995 by Elinor Kenney Farquhar and David T. Kenney, SAIS 1964 (M.A.), in memory of their father, a SAIS Advisory Council member who served as Undersecretary of the Navy from 1947 to 1949 and directed the Marshall Plan in Europe in the 1950's. The fellowship supports one academically-exceptional and financially-needy student.
  • Eteri Loria Kikvadze Almon Fellowship - Established in 2010 by George Kikvadze, SAIS’02 (M.A.), in honor of his grandmother, and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, this two-year fellowship supports an exceptional M.A. candidate at SAIS. Mr. Kikvadze is an investment management advisor in Ukraine.
  • Nemir and Nada Kirdar Fellowship - Established in 1999 by an anonymous donor, the fellowship benefits a student pursuing Middle East Studies. Mr. Kirdar is President and CEO of Investcorp.
  • Elise Lease Legacy Fellowship - Established by a bequest from Elise M. Lease, a native of Baltimore, Maryland. Although she was not an alumna of SAIS, Mrs. Lease left a legacy to the School for financial aid. Mrs. Lease studied French and Spanish at Smith College and graduated from Goucher College with a BA in Romance Languages. She received an MA in American Literature and Spanish Literature from George Washington University, and studied German, Russian and Spanish at Shepherd College. Her love of languages served Mrs. Lease in her long career at the CIA.
  • Henry Kissinger Fellowship - Established in 1999 by an anonymous donor in honor of Henry Kissinger, the former U.S. secretary of State, to assist students concentrating in American Foreign Policy.
  • Mitchell L. Kornblit Fellowship - Established in 2000 by Mitchell L. Kornblit, A&S 1972 (B.A.), SAIS 1973 (M.A.). Mr Kornblit is a principal of Shattuck Hammond Partners, LLC. The fund was established to support an international student studying International Law.
  • Marie Kraus Fellowship - Established in 1998 with a bequest from Marie Kraus. Preference in award of the fellowship is given to students from Spain, Italy, and South America.
  • John Kremer Fellowship - Established in 1999 by John Kremer, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), a financial management executive with Credit Suisse. The fellowship provides support for one student.
  • Mary E. and Robert G. Lambert Fellowship - Established in 1998 by Ron Lambert, director of career services at SAIS, and his family in honor of his father's 80th birthday and in memory of his mother. The award is designed to support a student demonstrating financial need and planning a career in the public or non-profit sectors. Preference is given to former Peace Corps volunteers.
  • W. Jeffrey Lawrence Fellowship - Established in 2000 by W. Jeffrey Lawrence, A&S 1977 (B.A.), SAIS 1978 (M.A.). The award was created to support a student completing the 5th year of a B.A./M.A. program. Mr. Lawrence is a partner in the Mergers & Acquisitions Group of Sherman & Sterling.
  • Levinson-Baker Fellowship - Established in 2000 by Rear Admiral Ted Baker and his wife, Stephanie Levinson Baker, SAIS 1970 (M.A.). Adm. Baker was a SAIS Associate Dean and Senior Associate Dean over a period of 13 years. Ms. Baker is a former fellow at the Brookings Institute, and was economic editor and economics correspondent at CBS.
  • W. Arthur Lewis Fellowship - Established by Jacqueline V. Brady, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), in honor of her father and awarded to a minority student demonstrating financial need and excellence in international trade economics. Ms. Brady is an executive with GMAC Institutional Advisors, LLC.
  • Lindmor Foundation Fellowship - Established in 2000 by the Lindmor Foundation, the fellowship supports a student from Sub-Saharan Africa. Preference is given to students from Uganda, Rwanda, and West Africa who plan to return to the region to pursue a career after graduation.
  • James S. Lipscomb fellowship - Established by Joseph S. Lipscomb, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), in memory of his father, the former director of the George Gund Foundation and a founding member of the Independent Sector. Joseph Lipscomb is a member of the SAIS Advisory Council and managing director of the Global Environment Fund. The fellowship assists students pursuing careers in public service.
  • Michael Livanos Fellowship for International Trade Economics - Established in 1997 by Mr. Livanos, A&S 1973, SAIS 1974 (M.A.), for a student concentrating in international trade economics. He is an executive with SCIO Shipping.
  • Melville E. Locker Memorial Fellowship - Established in 1961 by Theodore Locker, KSAS 1937, and his friends in memory of his brother, Melville E. Locker, and awarded to an academically exceptional international relations student.  Theodore Locker, who died in 1985, was president of Bonafide Estates, Inc.
  • Ann Dorsey Day Lockhart Fellowship - Established 1998 by Margaret E. G. Vanderhye, SAIS 1972 (M.A.), and Robert Vanderhye in honor of her friend and classmate, Ms. Lockhart, SAIS 1972 (M.A.). The fellowship benefits one academically-exceptional and financially-needy student. Mrs. Vanderhye currently serves in the Virginia House of Delegates.
  • Lockheed Martin Fellowship - Initiated in 1996 by the Lockheed Martin Corporation to support international students. The company is headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland.
  • Reuben B. and Estelle S. Loeb Fellowship - Established by Nancy Loeb, A&S 1978, SAIS 1980 (M.A.), BC 1981, in honor of her parents. Nancy Loeb works as general counsel to Takeda Pharmaceuticals North America, Inc. The fellowship supports one M.A. candidate.
  • Williams Swift Martin Jr. Fellowship - Established in 2003 by Williams Swift Martin IV, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), in honor of his grandfather. The fund was created to support an academically-exceptional and economically-disadvantaged student. Mr. Martin is a foreign service officer with the U.S. State Department, currently serving in Nepal.
  • C. Paul and Eleanor Matthiesen Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Penn Wyrough, SAIS 1987 (M.A.), and his wife, Kathy Wyrough, in honor of Mr. Wyrough's aunt on her 80th birthday and in memory of his uncle. Both were devoted teachers in Trenton, New Jersey public schools. This fund supports students planning careers in public service, with preference given to students interested in teaching.
  • Dr. Rajko Medenica Almon Fellowship - Established by Deborah Medenica, SAIS’97 (M.A.), and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace, this two-year fellowship will support an exceptional M.A. candidate, preferably concentrating in Latin American Studies.  This award is named in memory of Ms. Medenica’s father-in-law, Dr. Rajko Medenica, a world-renowned cancer specialist.
  • Judy Hendren Mello Fellowship - Established in 1987 by Judy Hendren Mello, BC’67, SAIS’68 (M.A.), to support a female student from the Bologna Center, preferably concentrating in Latin American Studies.  Ms. Mello was a former member of the Bologna Center Advisory Council and former president and CEO of the First Woman’s Bank in Manhattan.  Ms. Mello passed away in 2003.
  • Richard A. Melville Scholarship in Memory of Dean Philip W. Thayer - Established in 1985 by Mr. Melville, BC 1958, SAIS 1959 (M.A.), to honor Philip Thayer, dean of SAIS from 1948 to 1961. Mr. Melville (d. 2005) was a former SAIS Advisory Council member and served as a University trustee from 1983 to 1989. The scholarship supports M.A. students, with special consideration given to Bates College alumni.
  • Harvey M. and Lyn P. Meyerhoff Fellowship - Established in 2003 by Harvey M. Meyerhoff in honor of his wife Lyn P. Meyerhoff. The fellowship supports two American students who possess leadership potential in international affairs.
  • Marshall H. Millsap Fellowship - Established in 1996 by Mr. Millsap, BC 1975, SAIS 1976 (M.A.). Mr. Millsap is a senior vice president of JP Morgan Chase Bank.
  • Morgan and Judith McGrath Fellowship - Established by Morgan McGrath, BC’82, SAIS’83 (M.A.), and his wife Judith, this two year fellowship supports an exceptional M.A. candidate.  Mr. McGrath is head of International Banking for JPMorgan Chase’s Commercial Bank.
  • Mount Vernon Fellowship - Establishedby Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr., SAIS’74 (M.A.), to support U.S. citizens in the International Development Program. Mr. Sullivan is CEO of CM&F Group, Inc. a New York-based insurance brokerage firm serving the needs of healthcare professionals.
  • Ludmilla and Richard Murphy Fellowship - Established in 2004 by Ludmilla, SAIS 1961 (M.A.), and Richard Murphy, SAIS 1958 (M.A.). The fund was established to assist a student from Eastern Europe, with preference given to students from Ukraine, planning to return to their home country to pursue a career in the government or nonprofit sector.
  • Stavros Niarchos Foundation Fellowship- This fellowship was established in 2004 by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. It supports students undertaking their first year of M.A. study in Bologna, Italy and second year in Washington, D.C. Preference is given to students from Greece, with back-up authority for those from the European Union.
  • Paul H. Nitze Fellowship - Established in 1986 by the Douglas Dillon Fund to support two academically-exceptional students in honor of Ambassador Paul H. Nitze, co-founder of SAIS. Ambassador Nitze was a Johns Hopkins University trustee emeritus from 1956 to 1979, and received an honorary degree in 1967. In celebration of his 90th birthday in 1997, friends and family contributed to the fellowship.
  • R. Kendall Nottingham Fellowship - Established in 2010 by the Freeman Foundation in memory of R. Kendall Nottingham,  KSAS’59, to support one M.A. candidate, awarded on the basis of merit, and one Ph.D. candidate, awarded to an exceptional student with an interest in teaching, annually in the China Studies Program.  Mr. Nottingham was a trusted member of the SAIS Advisory Council and the Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees.  He passed away in 2008.
  • Morris W. Offit Fellowship - Established by an anonymous donor in honor of Morris W. Offit, KSAS 1957, trustee emeritus and past chairman of the Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees and past member of the SAIS Advisory Council.
  • Ned S. Offit Fellowship - Established by Ned Offit, A&S 1987, SAIS 1993 (M.A.), to benefit an exceptional student in Latin American Studies. Mr. Offit is an executive with OFFITBANK.
  • Sarah Kenney Brown O'Hagan and L. Peter O'Hagan Fellowship - Established in 1997 by Mrs. O'Hagan, SAIS 1986 (M.A.), and her husband, Peter O'Hagan, SAIS 1987 (M.A.), to benefit a Canadian or U.S. citizen attending SAIS. Mr. O'Hagan is an executive with Goldman Sachs, and Mrs. O'Hagan is active with the International Rescue Committee. Both are members of the SAIS Advisory Council.
  • John E. Osborn Fellowship - Established in 2000 by John E. Osborn, SAIS 1992 (M.I.P.P.),  the fellowship is intended to provide support to students who received their undergraduate degrees from one of the CIC Institutions (Chicago, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, and Wisconsin Universities). Further preference is given to those concentrating in Russian and Eastern European Studies.
  • Robert E. Osgood Memorial Fellowship - Established in 1989 by Gretchen Osgood, Nurs 1946, in memory of her husband, the third dean of SAIS (1973-79), to support students of American Foreign Policy. Dr. Osgood was a distinguished scholar and teacher in the field.
  • David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship - Established in 1995 by the Packard Foundation, for students whose academic records and personal achievements mark them as leaders.
  • Cynthia Bradford Paddock Fellowship - The fellowship was established in 2002 by Cynthia Paddock Doroghazi, SAIS 1994 (M.A.), and supports exceptional students from the former Soviet Union countries, with a preference for students in Russian and Eastern European Studies.
  • Parachini Family Fellowship - Established in 1995 by Anne and Victor Parachini Jr. and their children, Lesley Anne Parachini, BC 1989, SAIS 1990 (M.A.), and John Victor Parachini, BC 1987, SAIS 1990 (M.A.). Lesley Parachini is an investment manager and John Parachini is a policy analyst with the Rand Corporation. The fellowship supports students from Eastern and Central Europe studying both at SAIS in Washington and the Bologan Center.
  • Sandro Pertini Fellowship - Established in 1984 to honor former Italian President Pertini, who received an honorary doctor of laws from the University on the occasion of the Bologna Center's 30th anniversary. The fellowhip is awarded to a Bologna Center student in Washington.
  • Mary Pierce Fellowship - Established in 1999 by John Metzler, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), to assist a student with an interest in climate change. Mr. Metzler is an executive with Climate Change Capital.
  • Emma and Lloyd Pollish Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Eric Pollish, SAIS 1985 (M.A.), director of global trade finance at Warburg Dillon Read, to benefit one student.
  • Colin L. Powell Fellowship - Established to honor the 1992 SAIS commencement speech by former Secretary of State and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Colin Powell. The fellowship benefits an academically-exceptional and economically-disadvantaged student.
  • Kate Rothko Prizel and Ilya Prizel Fellowship - Established in 1998 by Ilya Prizel, SAIS 1982 (M.A.), 1987 (Ph.D.), a former SAIS faculty member in Russian and Eastern European Studies, and his wife, Kate Rothko Prizel, to provide fellowship support. Kate Rothko Prizel, Med 1978, is a former faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
  • Reader's Digest Fellowship - Established in 1967 by the Reader's Digest Foundation to support an academically-exceptional student.
  • Richard H. Rickards Memorial Fellowship - Established in 2006 by James G. Rickards, SAIS 1974 (M.A.), in memory of Richard H. Rickards. The fellowship was created to support students pursuing a degree in Latin American Studies.
  • Helmut Sonnenfeldt Almon Fellowship - Established in 2010 by Gary, Babette Sonnenfeldt, Eric and Annie Lubben, and with a legacy gift from David Almon, SAIS’53 (M.A.), and his wife, Grace.  The two-year fellowship is awarded to an M.A. candidate in the SAIS Strategic Studies Program and honors Helmut Sonnenfeldt, KSAS’50, KSAS’51 (M.A.), and recognizes his commitment to education and his strong ties to Johns Hopkins University, where he has the rare distinction of being an alumnus, an emeritus trustee, and former adjunct instructor.
  • Sasine and Sorensen Family Fellowship - Established in 2000 by Ron Sasine, SAIS 1991 (M.A.), and his wife Karen Sorensen Sasine, in honor of their parents' legacy of faith and service. The fellowship benefits one student with experience in full-time religious work or relief service.
  • Frank and Lolita Savage Fellowship - Established in 1986 by Mr. Savage, SAIS 1964 (M.A.), CEO of Savage Holdings, LLC, member of the SAIS Advisory Council and emeritus member of The Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees. The fellowship benefits up to two economically-disadvantaged students.
  • Todd W. Seabold Memorial Scholarship - Established in 1986 for students in Latin American Studies by family and friends in memory of Mr. Seabold, SAIS 1968 (M.A.) . Mr. Seabold was an executive with Banker's Trust Company.
  • Ronald K. Shelp Fellowship in Honor of Dr. Edmund C. Martin - Established in 1987 for exceptional students in Latin American Studies by Mr. Shelp, SAIS 1966 (M.A.), in honor of Dr. Martin, his Georgia high school principal. Mr. Shelp, a former SAIS Advisory Council member, is an author.
  • M. Gregg Smith Fellowship - Established in 2007 by M. Gregg Smith, SAIS 1967 (M.A.), the fellowship benefits students demonstrating academic merit and financial need, with preference given to U.S. citizens. Mr. Smith is the former president of the Oregon Friends of C.G. Jung as well as former principal of the M. Gregg Smith Company.
  • Robb E. Smith Fellowship - Established in 2002 by Joan Kerrigan, wife of Robb E. Smith, BC 1964, SAIS 1964 (M.A.), the fellowship supports one Bologna Center student undertaking a second year of study at SAIS DC.
  • Paul Smyke Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Paul Smyke, SAIS 1994 (M.A.), for a promising student of international affairs, with preference given to graduates of Macalaster College. Mr. Smyke is a senior advisor with the World Economic Forum.
  • Stelling-Danielewski Fellowship - Established in 1998 by Christopher Danielewski, A&S 1977, SAIS 1978 (M.A.), and his wife, Christine Stelling-Danielewski, SAIS 1987 (M.A.), for students concentrating in European or Eastern European Studies. Mr. Danielewski is a managing director for Global Market Consultants and Ms. Stelling-Danielewski is director of institutional advancement at Marymount University.
  • Ernest Sturc Fellowship - Established in 2001 by Hilda Sturc, a long-time friend of SAIS, in memory of her loving husband. The fellowship was created to support students from the Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland, and Hungary.
  • Gary Talarico and Linda Filardi Fellowship - Established by Mr. Talarico, SAIS 1983 (M.A.), a member of the SAIS Advisory Council, and his wife, Linda Filardi, SAIS 1983 (M.A.), to support an academically-exceptional student. Mr. Talarico is managing partner of Cora Street Partners, and Ms. Filardi is an attorney.
  • Nils O. Tcheyan and Karen Peake Tcheyan Fellowship - Established in 1999 by Nils and Karen Tcheyan, both SAIS 1980 (M.A.), to benefit one student. Mr. Tcheyan is employed with the World Bank.
  • The Tran Thi Quynh Hoa Fellowship - Established in 2006 by Frederick Z. Brown and his friends. The name of the Fellowship was changed in 2010 at Mr. Brown's request to commemorate the short but brilliant life of Ms. Hoa and to make her memory part of the SAIS heritage. The fellowship offers financial assistance to worthy students from Vietnam.
  • Philip W. Thayer Fellowship - Established in 1968 by alumni and friends to honor Dean Thayer, the first dean of SAIS (1948-1961), the fellowship supports up to two students.
  • Doris Turner Fellowship - Established in 1998 by David Brinkley III, SAIS 1983 (M.A.), for a student who reflects the dedication to scholarship and education of Professor Turner, a former teacher who encouraged him to pursue his education at SAIS. Mr. Brinkley is a senior vice president of Theravance, Inc.
  • Elisabeth H. Whited Fellowshipm - Established by a legacy gift from Elisabeth Whited, SAIS’49 (M.A.), in 2010, to support an exceptional M.A. candidate, with preference given to female students.
  • John W. Watzek Fellowship - Established by Jerry de St. Paer, SAIS 1966 (M.A.), in 1995. The award supports an academically-exceptional student. A member of the SAIS Advisory Council, Mr. de St. Paer is senior vice president of American International Group, Inc.
  • James F. Whittaker Fellowship - Established in 1998 by Mr. Whittaker, BC 1974, SAIS 1975 (M.A.), for students from Brazil or concentrating in Latin American Studies. Mr. Whittaker is director of government affairs for Intel Corporation.
  • Francis O. Wilcox Memorial Fellowship - Established in 1986 by alumni and friends in memory of Francis Wilcox, former dean of SAIS (1961-1973) and former chief of staff of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The fellowship benefits one academically-exceptional student.
  • Jacob and Lillian Wolfowitz Fellowship - Established in 1998 by former SAIS dean Paul Wolfowitz in honor of his parents, both of whom dedicated their careers to education. Preference is given to students pursuing a career in public service

Departmental Fellowships
These fellowships are awarded at the discretion of the academic programs.

  • A. Doak Barnett Fellowship - Established by the Freeman Foundation in 2000, the fellowship enables two American and two Chinese students to benefit from the unique education experiences at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center and SAIS DC. Mr. Barnett is a former SAIS faculty member.
  • Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation Fellowship - Established in 1991 by the Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation, the fellowship supports students concentrating in Strategic Studies, selected on the basis of merit.
  • Christine and Erik Brown Fellowship for China Studies - Established in 2006 by David and Erna Brown in honor of their children, the fund supports a China Studies student intending to pursue a career in U.S. government, journalism, teaching, or non-profit work for at least five years after graduation.
  • William H. Donner Foundation Fellowship - The fellowship was established in 1968 by the New York-based William H. Donner Foundation, and supports study and research by M.A. and Ph.D. students on Canada and its foreign policy.
  • George Frederick Jewett Foundation Fellowship - Established in 1985 by the Jewett Foundation for M.A. candidates in Japanese Studies.
  • Stephen C.Y. & Christine Y.C. Liu Fellowship - Established in 2004 by Paul Liu, SAIS 1986 (M.A.), in honor of his parents. The fund supports an exceptional student in Asian Studies.
  • James and Margaret Loe Fellowship for Excellence in China Studies - Established in 1991 by Barbara Loe, Gertrude Tai, Lucy Lee, Agnes Li, and Mary Jean Wong in memory of their parents, who instilled in their children American ideals and Chinese traditional values. The fellowship supports M.A. or Ph.D. candidates in China Studies committed to promoting understanding between the people of China and the U.S.
  • Patchwork Charitable Foundation Fellowship - Established in 2006 by the Patchwork Charitable Foundation, the fellowship was created to support students from Indonesia pursuing a degree in Southeast Asia Studies who plan careers in Indonesia.
  • Prem Fellowship for Thai Studies - Established in 2003 to support Thai students pursuing a degree in Southeast Asia Studies. The endowed fellowship was established by Siam Cement Public Company Ltd, Bangkok Bank Public Company Ltd, TCC Group of Bangkok and the Charoen Pokphan Group of Bangkok.
  • Minno and Mohinder Sambhi Fellowship - Established in 2006 by Mohinder P. Sambhi, the fellowship supports one student concentrating in South Asia Studies.
  • Sochon Foundation Fellowship - Established in 2007 by the Sochon Foundation, the fellowship supports financially-needy graduate students in the Korea Studies Program.
  • Helmut Sonnenfeldt Fellowship - Established in 2010 by Gary, Babette Sonnenfeldt, Eric and Annie Lubben. The fellowship is awarded to an M.A. candidate in SAIS's Strategic Studies Program and recognizes Mr. Sonnenfeldt's commitment to education and his strong ties to the Johns Hopkins University, where he has rare distinction of being an alumnus (KSAS '50 and '51) an emeritus Trustee, and former adjunct instructor. The fellowship will be available for two academic years.
  • C.V. Starr Foundation Fellowship - Established in 2006 by The C.V. Starr Foundation, the fellowship supports students in the South Asia and Southeast Asia Studies Programs.
  • H. William Tanaka Memorial Fellowship - Established in 1993 in memory of Mr. Tanaka by his wife, Lily Tanaka, and his daughter, Michele Tanaka. The fellowship is designated for students who demonstrate particular promise in Japan Studies and in the understanding of U.S.-Japan relations.
  • Toyota Fellowship - Established in 1986 by the Toyota Motor Corporation, headquartered in Japan, for students concentrating in Japan Studies.
  • U.S.-Pakistan Relations Fellowship - Established in 2001 by Americans for Peace and Justice in South Asia, the fellowship is designed to enhance relations between the people of the United States and the people of Pakistan. The fellowship supports a student of Pakistani-American or Pakistani heritage.
  • P.K. Vyas Fellowship - Established in 2001 by Dr. P.K. Vyas, a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The award supports a student from South Asia, preferably India, who has an interest in South Asia Studies.
  • William and Marie-Daniele Zartman Fellowship - Established in 1996 for doctoral candidates by Professor Zartman, A&S 1952 (M.A.).
  • Freeport-McMoRan Fellowship for Southeast Asia Studies - Established to support worthy students from Indonesia concentrating in Southeast Asia Studies.
