Health Insurance Students at SAIS must maintain adequate health insurance coverage to provide protection against unexpected accidents and illness. Full-time students must purchase the University Student Health Insurance Plan or sign a waiver demonstrating health insurance coverage comparable to the University's plan. Short Term Health Insurance Johns Hopkins does not endorse a particular temporary health insurance plan for students who wish to bridge the gap between their old health insurance and the university plan or between the university plan and coverage offered by an employer. For an example of a good short term plan, students may consider Assurant health insurance. Students who are not currently enrolled in the university and who are planning to travel abroad may wish to purchase an International SOS Global Traveler membership for access to medical information and assistance. Students who are full-time JHU students are covered by the SOS plan when traveling in relation to university-sponsored activities, but not if they are traveling for personal purposes. Students who are currently enrolled in the Chickering plan are automatically covered by the Assist America travel insurance plan for all travel. Pre-existing Conditions and Bridging the Gap Students who have pre-existing conditions should pay special attention to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). To identify plans that will cover individuals with pre-existing conditions and to understand the rules that apply to exclusions of these conditions, students should contact the state health insurance commission for the state in which they plan to live. Students should be aware that COBRA coverage only applies to medical coverage offered as an employee benefit. This means that students participating in the insurance plan offered by Johns Hopkins are not eligible to apply for COBRA coverage.
Immunization Requirements The government of the District of Columbia requires that all students who are under 26 years old at the time of registration have proof of the following: - 2 doses of measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR)
- tetanus/diptheira booster within the past ten years
Students who are scheduled to enroll for the Fall 2008 semester and who are under the age of 26 as of September 1st, 2008 must submit a SAIS immunization form by August 15th, 2008. Students may access this form by clicking here. Please note that incomplete immunizations, invalid dates, or forms which lack a validation stamp will not be pocessed and will delay your registration. Travel Clinics Students in need of travel vaccinations or other travel-related medical information should visit a travel clinic. Click here for a list of DC-area travel clinics. Please note that the Chickering Health Insurance does not cover the cost of travel vaccinations.
