Johns Hopkins Student Assistance Program (JHSAP) Balancing the demands of school, family and work can be overwhelming at times. Managing even small life events can be more challenging when our time and energy is heavily committed. As a result, students frequently experience significant amounts of stress during their professional education. Extra support and coping skills can be helpful in these situations. The Johns Hopkins University is committed to assisting these difficult and challenging times. The Johns Hopkins Student Assistance Program (JHSAP) provides confidential support to students dealing with pressures and problems during their academic careers. JHSAP is a life management program that can help students identify stressors and manage them in a healthy way. Some common concerns that JHSAP can help students address include: - Family/marital

Getting help is easy, convenient and confidential. Just call the number listed below. Crisis counseling is always available to you to assure that you get the assistance you need when you need it. When a student calls JHSAP, a representative will talk to you briefly to understand the reason for your call. In most cases, we will then schedule an appointment for you to come in and speak with a JHSAP counselor. The goal is to get to know you, understand what is going on, and to talk to you about how to move forward in a healthy way. To do this, JHSAP offers the following services: - Brief counseling for assistance with problems of daily living
- Consultating that supports academic and/or professional development
- Immediate support and management for crisis situations
- Identification and assessment of a mental health problem
- Referral to appropriate and accessible services and resources
- Handouts on topics like self-sabotage, imposter syndrome, preparing presentations and papers, maintaining healthy relationships, intimate partner violence, self-esteem, body image and eating disorders, substance abuse, stress management, time management, mentoring relationships, perfectionism, coping with seasonal depression, preventing suicide, adapting to change and succeeding as a graduate student.
Confidentiality All counseling sessions, except as required by law, are confidential. No one will know you are using the program unless you share this information with others, either by verbally discussing your participation or by signing a release of information requesting the program to share information with another party. JHSAP carefully follows State and Federal guidelines pertaining to confidentiality whereby if we become aware of harm to self or others, a duty to warn and/or protect may be applicable. Eligibility & Cost Services are offered to all enrolled SAIS students in Washington, D.C. There is no cost to students for utilizing the program. Each time you contact the program, a counselor will listen to you and assess your concerns. Together you will develop a plan to address the concerns. If longer term assistance is appropriate, you may be referred outside of the program for additional support. JHSAP will help you find a clinician through your health plan or community resources. In these circumstances, there may be fees associated with the other services and resources to which are referred. The Aetna Student Health insurance plan deductible is reduced to $75 per condition when JHSAP refers you for treatment. Additional Counseling Services SAIS encourages students to participate in the Johns Hopkins Student Assistance Program (JHSAP). If you do not wish to take advantage of this service, you may contact a counselor outside of the JHSAP program. SAIS may reimburse students who do not use JHSAP for up to $150 of their annual $250 deductible. Students may request reimbursement by presenting a copy of the counselor's bill to the Student Accounts Office. The Aetna Student Health Plan does not have a referral requirement for mental health benefits. To find an in-network provider, students may click here to access the Aetna DocFind feature.
