First Year Representative Elections -
VOTING EXTENDED!  Through Thursday at 5pm!

Amanda Lullo
I grew up in Buffalo, NY and went to Wheaton College in Massachusetts. When I returned from my junior year abroad, the atmosphere on campus had changed.  Sadly, a lesbian couple’s dorm room door was barricaded and nailed shut.  The fire department had to come with sledgehammers to free them. From afar, witnesses saw the two perpetrators, wearing Wheaton jerseys. As you can imagine, this outraged and divided the community.  Gay verses strait, male verses female, sports team against sports team. Friendships were divided and our happy, learning environment was in chaos. Professors tried to keep the tension out of the classroom and the school left the resolution to the police.

I organized an event where over a thousand students, the president, and administration publicly apologized to the victims.  The wrongdoers were never found, but the victims were grateful to all those who supported them; we moved on as a stronger student body.

Moving forward, I have made it a priority to be involved in my community to improve upon the bad characteristics and maintain the good ones.  Upon graduation I moved to NY to take a job at Merrill Lynch.  I immediately formed a Wheaton Alumni Association now functioning with 5,000+ members and have recently passed along my leadership position to a fellow alumnus. Now I am here at SAIS, hoping to become a part of the Student Government Association. I bring experience working with the various departments in an academic institution and understand SGA’s important role to maintain a sense of community, as we are scatter throughout DC, Bologna and Nanjing.  So I come to you not as a “maverick” or a brilliant, handsome, sexy man who will bring great change to Washington, but as student who believes in our great diversity and the community we are lucky to be a part of here at SAIS.

David Rose
Hello SAIS 2010!

My name is Dave Rose, and I’m a BA/MA student concentrating in Strategic Studies. With your help, I would like the privilege of serving you on SGA.  Since I arrived here at SAIS, I have looked for ways to put myself to good use, and I can honestly say that this position appeals to the most. I don’t mind admitting, therefore, that the statement you are about to read is not a first draft, but is the product of a serious rewrite.

In the earlier draft, this paragraph read like a bullet point summary of past activities, and explained why my accomplishments would help me make SAIS a better place. I realized however, that I was dramatically missing the point. My years as a member of this university have taught me that the single greatest resource that Johns Hopkins has is neither its brand name nor its facilities. Instead, it is its people, and more specifically it is its students like us. Therefore, the best way for a representative to make SAIS a better place is to focus on your needs.

So what should have been a bio will instead be 3 solemn promises.
-I promise to always make myself available to you, regardless of what my schedule is like.
-I promise to represent your interests as thoroughly and as effectively as I possibly can
- I promise to always be willing to lend my assistance to you, or anyone else that needs my help.

We go to a great school. Lets make it greater.

Thank you for your consideration, Dave

Gabriel Serrato
My name is Gabriel Serrato and I am running for first-year representative to the SGA. I am a native Californian and graduate from U.C. Berkeley, where I double majored in arguing with hippies and finding the best places to eat on campus. For the past four years I have called Washington, DC home even though I spent most of that time in a tiny cubicle in the belly of the Pentagon.  I also serve as Vice President of Athletics for the Cal Alumni Board of Washington, DC, which means I have the unique ability of bringing people together for sports and beer.

As a new (poor) SAIS student I am excited to re-discover Washington with a new crowd of people and would like to share that knowledge with you as an SGA representative. I would like to organize more sporting events and help other SAIS students access all of the fun and free events in town.  I would also like to see if we can improve the quality of the television reception in the basement. A big shot TV without an HD connection makes me quite sad.

As your SGA representative I will work hard to make you feel more at home and work to sponsor events that bring you closer to the SAIS family. And oh yeah…babies love me.

Vote Serrato in ’08!

Paul Alois
I grew up in a diplomatic family, living in Costa Rica, Ecuador, the United States, Italy and Germany before graduating high school.  After spending a year backpacking around Europe I went to Florida State University, graduating in 2005 with a degree in Psychology and Chinese Studies.  I have lived in Washington DC for the last two years, working first for a think tank and then for Amnesty International.

My professional CV aside, here are a few personal factoids.  My favorite book is Siddhartha, favorite movie: Forrest Gump, favorite musician: Miles Davis, favorite cuisine: Indian, favorite city: Kuala Lumpur, favorite beer: Smithwicks.  I like boxing, playing guitar and riding my bike around DC.  I have been married to my wife Marika for two and a half years.

I believe I am very qualified to be your representative to the SGA.  I have five years of experience working in education, with two of those years at the university level.  Since coming to SAIS I have started a Facebook group, planned a few parties, and founded two Student Clubs.  Also, after two years of living in DC I have plenty of ideas for events.

If elected to the SGA, I would start working on two issues right away.  First, reducing the price of cafeteria coffee to 99 cents ($1.50 is crazy, it’s not Starbucks).  Second, increasing the number of International Policy classes; a lot of people have been stressing about this.  Of course, I will always be happy to take suggestions.

***All First-Year MA Students will receive an email on Monday with more information on online voting procedures.  Each MA1 will be allowed to vote for two (2) candidates.  Voting will be open from 9am EST Monday, September 15 through 5pm EST Thursday, September 18.***
