Career Services offers a variety of programs to support the development of core job- and internship-search skills, as well as sector and field specific knowledge ad skills. Many of our programs are co-sponsored with our Career Clubs. Below is an overview of our programs and information on past events. Current students and registered alumni can find more information on current career events on SAISWorks. Events that are open to all alumni and the general public can be found on the school calendar on the SAIS Insider Page. Note that not all events posted to the SAIS Calendar are open; attendance or RSVP requirements will be noted for each event. Professional Development Conference SAIS students have an opportunity to jump-start career activities by attending the Professional Development Conference hosted by the Career Services Office during the first month of classes. This comprehensive two-day program enables first-year SAIS students to begin the process of setting the professional goals that will guide them over the next two years. During this time, students can: - spend time on individual self-assessment,
- learn how to research employers,
- set short-term objectives,
- and build skills that will support them in their internship and job search.
Workshops Throughout the academic year, Career Service staff host a variety of workshops to help students gain a competitive edge when searching for internships and employment opportunities. Workshops are generally 90 minute sessions, designed to provide specific job search tools and skills, including resume writing, interviewing, networking and negotiating. Additional programs target particular industry sectors and others support students with an international focus. Career Panels Throughout the academic year, alumni participate in career-panel discussions sponsored in cooperation with Career Clubs. These discussions provide students with valuable sector information and insights about specific organizations and institutions. Professional Skills Courses Since 2006, Career Services has been coordinating a series of skills-based courses to provide students with added support in developing knowledge and expanding capabilities in areas identified by employers as essential for success in their industry, sector or function. Industry practitioners support SAIS faculty in designing and delivering courses in a range of subject areas, including leadership development, financial analysis, grant-writing and negotiations. Career Fairs Twice a year, in the fall and spring, SAIS Career Services hosts a Career Fair which draws employers from the public, private and non-profit sectors. With over 70 employers participating each year, students have an opportunity to meet recruiters with a particular interest in SAIS talent. Career Treks The Career Services staff works with committees of SAIS students to organize sector-focused treks to New York and other cities. Treks provide valuable opportunities for students to visit employer sites, hear alumni speak about their careers and gain insight into the hiring requirements of some of our top employers. With the Wall Street recruiting season commencing early in the fall, Career Services and the SAIS Finance Club are organizing a Wall Street Trek in September. Additional treks targeting consulting, energy and other private sector employers are slated for later in the semester. The annual January Trek to New York, will target the Federal Reserve Bank, the United Nations, other public and non-profit organizations, as well as media and journalism employers. First-year students are encouraged to participate in the Treks to gain insight into the career opportunities available to SAIS graduates, to further clarify their individual career goals and to begin to develop professional networks in cities and sectors of their choice. Current student students should check SAISWorks for additional details on these events.
Employer Presentations Throughout the year, top SAIS employers host on-campus presentations to promote their organization, explain the recruitment process, and in most cases, collect resumes for open internships and full-time positions. Site Visits Career Services also arranges site visits to local employers with a strong alumni base. These visits often include career panels that provide background on the variety of positions available, special topic presentations by senior alumni and recruiting presentations by human resources staff. Mock Interview Program Preceding the start of on-campus employer interviews in the Fall, Career Services sponsors a Mock Interview program. This event brings alumni back to SAIS to conduct practice interviews which highlight the unique hiring protocols and questions to be expected in interviews in the nonprofit, public and private sectors. **Primarily for second-year Students. Career Club Co-Sponsored Events Collaborating with the Career Clubs, Career Services coordinates employer visits and hosts representatives from different industries and organizations who share their “insider” insights and experiences with SAIS students. The trips and briefings provide a great opportunity to learn more about industry requirements and future career opportunities.
