Eligibility Applicants for all Summer Programs should have at least a “B” average. Applicants for Summer Courses and Summer Certificates must have completed at least a bachelor’s degree or be in the last semester of their undergraduate senior year at the time of application. Applicants for the Summer Language Institute and English for International Studies must have completed a minimum of one year of undergraduate studies prior to the start of SAIS Summer Programs. All SAIS courses are conducted at the graduate level and participants are expected to perform at this level. | Eligibility Applicants must be current or incoming SAIS degree students, current matriculating Johns Hopkins University graduate students, SAIS or JHU alumni, or non-degree students in good standing who were previously enrolled at SAIS during the fall, spring or summer terms. Note: Returning non-degree students from the Summer Language Institute or English for International Studies may not be automatically accepted for the non-language Summer Courses. JHU undergraduates who have completed at least one year of study are also eligible to apply for the Summer Language Institute or English for International Studies. All SAIS courses are conducted at the graduate level and participants are expected to perform at this level. |
Application Materials - A completed Application and Registration Form.
- A one-page personal statement describing motivation and goals for attending SAIS Summer Programs. Applicants may discuss any academic work or overseas or professional experience related to their interest in international affairs or the language for which they are applying.
- Official, sealed transcripts from all degree-granting institutions (if not in English, also submit the official translation of the entire transcript and an explanation of the institution’s grading system).
- A current résumé or curriculum vitae.
- An official TOEFL score for those applicants to Summer Courses whose native language is not English and who have not received their undergraduate degree from an institution where English is the language of instruction. The minimum required score is 600 paper-based, 250 computer-based or 100 Internet-based. The SAIS ETS code for electronic score reporting is 5610. For English for International Studies, the minimum required score is 500 paper-based, 173 computer-based or 61 Internet-based. An interview with the program coordinator may replace the need for an official TOEFL score for English for International Studies only. SAIS also accepts a minimum IELTS score of 7.0 for Summer Courses or 4.5 for English for International Studies.
- A non-refundable application fee of $50 ($85 if materials are postmarked after Friday, April 26, 2013).
| Application Materials A completed Application and Registration Form. Current JHU degree students should submit an Interdivisional Registration Form from their home division's Registrar's Office. Official transcripts not already on file at SAIS or JHU showing passing grades for prerequisite course work. Non-degree students who are currently pursuing a degree outside of JHU must submit updated official copies of transcripts. A late fee of $35 if materials are postmarked after Friday, April 26, 2013.

For all applicants - admissions decisions: Application materials will be processed as soon as they are received. Applications will only be processed after all supporting documentation is received. For first-time, non-degree students, written notification will be mailed within two weeks of receipt of completed application. If admitted, a 10 percent non-refundable deposit for each course (to be credited toward tuition) must be submitted. This deposit will only be refunded if a course is canceled. Full payment is due by Monday, May 20, 2013. For those who apply after this date, full payment is due upon acceptance. A registration confirmation will be issued upon full payment of tuition.
