Waiving Coverage

Students who wish to waive coverage in the Aetna Student Health plan should complete the online waiver process through the Aetna Student Health Web site under JHU - SAIS to show comparable U.S.-based coverage. Navigate to "Medical Plan: Enroll/Waive." The waiver site is open from July 16 through September 30 only.  For students entering SAIS in the spring semester, the site will be open approximately December 13 through January 31.  Students will not be permitted to waive coverage after these deadlines for the remainder of the academic year.

To complete the waiver process, students must provide a copy of their insurance card used to waive the Aetna Student Health Insurance to the SAIS Student Accounts Office in Nitze 310.

To be considered comparable, your alternate coverage must include:

  • Lifetime maximum coverage of at least US$300,000.
  • In-patient and out-patient care (including office visits and ancillary procedures) in the Washington, D.C. area.  Bologna and Nanjing students should have coverage in Italy and China. Coverage for emergency-only care does not satisfy this requirement.
  • Prescription drug coverage.
  • In-patient and out-patient mental health care.
  • Annual deductible of $750 or less per person.
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation benefits of at least US$10,000 and $7,500 respectively.
  • Coverage throughout the 2012-2013 academic year.

Note that successful waivers are valid for up to one policy year (August 15 to August 14). Students who waived coverage during their first year at SAIS will need to request a waiver for their second year.

Insurance fees are charged to all students' accounts. Charges will be reversed after SAIS is notified of successful waivers. Aetna Student Health provides periodic notifications, so it may take some time for credits to appear.

Students whose waivers are denied online may submit this form and supporting documentation from their alternate insurance company to the Office of Student Life to appeal by September 30.
