Health Insurance

It is University policy that all full-time Washington MA, MIPP and Ph.D. resident (pre-dissertation) students maintain adequate health insurance coverage to provide protection against unexpected accidents and illnesses. Full-time students must purchase the University Student Health Insurance Plan (Aetna Student Health) or successfully complete the waiver process demonstrating U.S.-based coverage comparable to the University's plan. All full-time students are automatically enrolled in the Aetna Student Health plan as of August 15.

Part-time MA, MIPP and Ph.D. non-resident (dissertation research) students may enroll in the enroll for the same coverage extended to full-time students. Contact the SAIS Business Office to enroll and submit payment by September 30. Contact us if you have questions about participating in the Aetna Student Health plan.

Note that December graduates who wish to keep their coverage through the end of the policy year on August 14 must contact saisbilling@jhu.edu no later than January 31.  Payment for the other half of the yearly premium must also be received.  If coverage is not requested or payment is not made by January 31, coverage will be terminated as of February 14.

Bologna Students
Participation in the University Health Insurance Plan is optional for you, but you will be automatically enrolled in the Plan unless you waive coverage.

  1. You are obligated to purchase the Italian State Insurance Plan (approximately $135) if you do not have other coverage valid in Italy. The Bologna Center will provide you with enrollment details when you arrive. The State Insurance Plan only covers emergency treatment while you are in Italy or other Schengen countries.
  2. The school strongly recommends all students purchase the JHU Student Health Insurance Plan, as this will give you comprehensive coverage in Italy (in fact, around the world) as well as in the United States. Use the On Call International telephone number when traveling to locate medical assistance.

Nanjing Students
Participation in the University Student Health Insurance Plan is mandatory for you.

  1. Minimal medical facilities are offered in Nanjing, so the JHU Student Health Insurance Plan does cover medical evacuation to modern facilities in an emergency. Use the On Call International telephone number when traveling to locate medical assistance.
  2. Nanjing students may show proof of comparable coverage and waive participation in the Plan.
