Emergency Communication Protocol

In case of an emergency or accident, students should use the worldwide assistance services that are available to them to get the help they need.  The International SOS 24-Hour Alarm Center is available to provide medical advice, help with lost prescriptions, provide information on the nearest adequate medical facility or arrange medical evacuation.  The service also assists in replacing lost travel documents, contacting family members and making referrals to local lawyers.  International SOS is not a health insurance plan.  For more information, visit www.internationalsos.com or call the numbers below for assistance.

  • Those calling from the U.S., Mexico, Central or South America should dial 1.215.942.8226.
  • From Canada, call 1.800.441.4767. From Europe, the CIS, Africa or the Middle East, call 44.20.8762.8008.
  • From Asia, Australia or the Pacific Rim, call 65.6338.7800.
  • Call collect where available.
  • Be sure to have the JHU International SOS membership number, 11BSGC000019.

Aetna Student Health insurance members can also call On Call International for emergency travel assistance services such as emergency medical evacuation; 24-hour nurse help line; medical, dental and pharmacy referral; and lost luggage assistance.  If you need medical care while you are abroad, it is important that you contact On Call International first.  They will refer you to a clinic or specialist in the area based on the care you need and the adequacy of the facility.  You are responsible for paying for the services and then submitting a claim to Aetna for a reimbursement at the out-of-network rate.  To access On Call International from outside the U.S., dial the U.S. access code plus 1.603.328.1956.  Call collect where available.  For more information, visit the Aetna Student Health Web site at www.aetnastudenthealth.com/schools/jhusi .

Students should notify the school of their situation by calling the Security Desk Officer at the front desk of the Nitze Building in Washington, D.C. (+1.202.663.5600; choose option 1 after business hours or option 5 during business hours).  Be sure to provide a return telephone number and email address.  The Officer will notify the Associate Dean for Student Affairs or her designate to discuss appropriate action and follow up.
