Course Description: The SAIS Online Principles of Economics course covers the role of government in creating the proper environment for private markets to work well, and how government can improve outcomes when conditions are less than ideal. Major topics include consumer choice, production decisions, market structures, fiscal and monetary policies, unemployment, inflation, international trade, and exchange rates.
This course is available to all non-degree students and prospective SAIS MA, MIPP and Ph.D. applicants during the fall semester. This course will cover introductory micro and macroeconomics, and can be used to complete the SAIS MA economics prerequisite prior to the application deadline (completion of this prerequisite before applying is recommended by the SAIS Admissions Office, but not required). It can also be used as a prerequisite to take the SAIS Microeconomics and/or Macroeconomics courses. Registration is handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Requirements:
Online Principles of Economics is a non-credit course and will not appear on a SAIS transcript. In place of a transcript, students will receive a letter of completion on Academic Affairs letterhead verifying their enrollment and final grade in the course. Any grade below a B- is considered a failing grade.
Please note that admission to the Online Principles of Economics course is entirely independent from both degree and non-degree program admission and in no way implies acceptance to a SAIS degree or non-degree program.
Academic and Financial Policies:
A $500 deposit, due upon acceptance to the program in order to secure a seat in this course. The remaining $1000 is due 9/12/12. Please note that the $500 deposit on tuition is non-refundable, and that no tuition will be refunded after 9/12/12.
The last day to withdraw from the course without a failing grade is 10/17/12. No tuition will be refunded and a grade of W will be recorded for the course.
This course will be conducted in the same manner as a credit-based course and students are expected to participate fully. Missed assignments and a lack of participation may result in a failing grade and the inability to retake the course.
