The library occupies three floors of the Johns Hopkins building, and seats 180 in its large study rooms. Currently enrolled Bologna Center students have access to five catalog terminals, four reference workstations, and additional computers in the Student Computer Center. Johns Hopkins students may also plug personal laptops into the school's network, and wireless access is available throughout the building.
Johns Hopkins Bologna Center students may bring texts and study materials into the library, but the collection is also open to the general public, for consultation only. We request that non-Bologna Center users leave personal study materials in the cubicles near the library entrance. Members of the public can also apply to borrow materials from the general collection (see details on tessera application below). Valuables should never be left unattended in the library.
PERIODICALS
Current periodicals are held on the first floor of the library. Bound periodicals are kept in the compact shelving, in the basement. Periodicals may not circulate outside the library. Some of the more popular current periodicals are kept on four-hour reserve at the circulation desk. Daily newspapers are kept on the first floor.
REFERENCE COLLECTION
The Reference Collection is on the ground floor, and is identified by the “R” before the call number on the book label and in the online catalog.
Additional reference material (previous editions, past years' issues) is in the basement and is identified by “SR” in the book label and in the online catalog.
MICROFILM
A microfilm archive of several major newspapers is stored in the basement, along with a microfilm reading machine.
PHOTOCOPYING
Photocopying facilities are available in the library. Copycards can be borrowed from the Library desk and charged at the recharging machine at 5 cents per copy. The machine does not give change.
RESERVE MATERIAL
The library depends heavily on a reserve system to provide readings required for classes. Books and other items on reserve are kept behind the circulation desk and are loaned for four hours, with overnight borrowing available only to Johns Hopkins students. Only two reserve items may be borrowed at a time. The general public must leave a driver's license, carta d'identità or a passport to borrow reserve items, for use in the library only. Johns Hopkins students may place holds to ensure the item's availability.
