Travel During the OPT/Academic Training Period
F-1 visa holders may travel outside the United States during their period of Optional Practical Training. The following documents are needed to re-enter the United States:
- The unexpired Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
- I-20 endorsed by the ISSS director within the last 6 months
- Valid passport with a valid F-1 visa
- Letter from your employer acknowledging that you will return to your employment after a temporary absence.
J-1 students using their period of academic training need the following:
- DS-2019 with a valid travel signature
- Letter from the ISSS director confirming authorization for the academic training
- Valid passport with a valid visa stamp
- Letter from your employer acknowledging that you will return to your employment after a temporary absence
