International Student and Scholar Services | The Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS)
Under federal regulations governing the F and J visa programs, SAIS is required to provide certain information to the United States government on each student sponsored by the university in these statuses. This information is reported using the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), an Internet-based system that provides tracking, monitoring, and access to information on non-immigrant students (F and M visa) and exchange visitors (J visa).
SAIS is required to report the following information about you:
The university is also required to maintain up-to-date information regarding your dependents who are required to have their own versions of I-20s and DS-2019s, the documents used to obtain F and J status respectively.
SEVIS is intended to monitor your compliance with the regulations governing your status in addition to your entries and exits from the country. The information reported to SEVIS determines whether or not you remain in authorized status. Failure to maintain your status in accordance with the regulations may result in your loss of student status and result in your accruing periods of unauthorized presence in the United States. Unauthorized presence could seriously affect your ability to remain in the United States and could result in potential bars from returning to the United States.
It is important to understand the legal parameters of your student status and the staff of ISSS is readily available to discuss with you any plans you may have.
