Registering as Full-time Student Each Semester

International Student and Scholar Students | Registering as Full-time Student Each Semester

Students must register every semester at SAIS.  If you do not register, you will automatically lose your legal, F-1 or J-1 status.  Additionally, you are expected to carry a full course load each semester.  Please refer to the table below to determine your required course load.

You are not required to register when school is not in session or during the summer.

Concurrent Enrollment at Another Institution

SAIS students may, with approval, take up to two courses in the MBA program at the Maryland Business School of the university of Maryland, any of the divisions of Johns Hopkins University, or the D.C. location of Maxwell School of Syracuse university. In order to maintain your F-1 status, you need to inform the ISSS director that you plan to enroll at another institution.

Dropping/Withdrawing from Classes

Prior to withdrawing from a class, it is important that you consult both of the following individuals:

  1. your academic advisor, and
  2. the ISSS director.

Your academic advisor will advise you on the impact of the withdrawal on your academic plan.  The ISSS director, however, will advise you on how the withdrawal from the course may impact your ability to remain in the United States legally. Additionally, the ISSS director will determine whether the circumstances surrounding your withdrawal from the class fits into one of the acceptable reasons for falling below a full course of study.

Auditing Classes

Auditing classes can be an excellent way of enhancing your educational experience. Unfortunately, audited classes do not count towards determining whether you meet the legal definition of a full time F or J student.  Please consult with the ISSS director before auditing courses.
