International Student and Scholar Students | Grace Period

This is an additional period of time that students are allowed to remain in the United States upon completion of their course of study/training. 

  • 60/30 days post-completion grace period:  an F-1 student may remain in the U.S. up to 60 days and for J-1s they can remain in the U.S. up to 30 days after completion of study or program or practical training. During 60/30 days period, the student must not engage in employment. The 60/30 days period cannot be used to re-enter the U.S. after travel abroad. 
  • & lt;div>15 days grace period after authorized and approved withdrawals: an F-1 students who have been granted an authorized withdrawals by the Academic Advisor/Program may remain in the U.S. for up to 15 days following the withdrawal. SEVIS will also be notifies regarding your status. Students should be prepared to depart the U.S. No employment is permitted during this 15 days period. Therefore it is essential to notify OISSS in advance if you decide to withdraw from SAIS.
  • Unapproved withdrawals or terminations: if an F-1/J-1 student fails to maintain status, or withdraws from school or otherwise terminates or interrupts his/ her course of studies without first obtaining an approval from an Academic Advisor/Department and ISSS and noted through SEVIS, the student is not eligible for any grace period, and would be considered under the regulation to be out of status.
