We asked Alexis to tell us a little more about the back story of her photo “SAISers at Bronco Billy’s Dive Site in the British Virgin Islands.” Read below to learn more about her inspiration for the photo, how she executed the shot and some tips she would give future participants.
Where were you diving, and when were you there?
My SAIS classmate Alex Bardack and I were in the British Virgin Islands with my family in March 2012.
What inspired you to come up with the composition of your shot, and how did you execute it?
We decided to take an underwater SAIS photo while scuba diving at a dive site called the Chimney. We used an underwater magnetic dive slate to write “SAIS,” and the divemaster snapped the picture with his camera.
What tips would you give to someone competing in the photo contest next year?
Plan out your photo before you go underwater. Communicating your artistic vision to other people is much more difficult when you can't talk.
