China Studies Internships

The China Studies Program assists students find summer internships in China. The program is designed for first-year M.A. students in China Studies, but is open to others.  China Studies will help identify internship opportunities in Greater China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Taipei, and also Singapore.

Many internships require at least intermediate level Chinese, though some may not have any Chinese language requirement.  The China Studies Program tries to provide a modest amount of funding to all students with China Studies as their primary concentration to help cover the costs of those internships that are not self-funding.   Non-China Studies students can apply for financial aid earmarked for internships in Asia from the Career Services Office.   Students interested in internships in Greater China should submit:

  • a brief letter indicating the type of internship they seek, their qualifications for such internships, and their preferred locations, and
  • a one/two page resume.

These papers should be sent via email to Professor Carla Freeman at cfreeman5@jhu.edu.

China Studies will assist students in locating internships.  However, most students have found internships through their own networking; and, students also are advised to pursue their own searches and draw on the resources of the Career Services Office, which most years takes a small group of students to China on a Career Trek.

A list of organizations that have provided internships for China Studies students in the past (as well as student assessments of their internships) is available at the China Studies Office for students to review.   Regardless of the source of information about a particular internship, students themselves need to apply directly to potential hosts.  Normally this is done early in the spring semester, but some organizations such as the State Department and most financial institutions have earlier application deadlines, very often in October or November.   The terms and arrangements for specific internships will be negotiated directly by students with potential hosts.

China Studies will arrange an informational meeting on internships during the fall semester.  In early April, students will be offered the opportunity to submit a request for financial assistance for summer internships from the Program.  Students who receive these funds will be required to provide a one-page report describing their experiences by September of the following fall semester for the reference of students seeking internships in the future.
