Co-curricular Activities
Informal lectures are given throughout the semester by academics, diplomats and business professionals on varied aspects of Canadian policy. All students in Western Hemisphere Studies are eligible to participate in a biennial, weeklong series of meetings with top Canadian policymakers; preference will be given to those students selecting Canadian Studies as their concentration.
South Korea Energy Trip 2010 (March 14 - March 21) - The Canadian Studies Program traveled by high-speed train to the south of the Korean peninsula for meetings: Meeting with officials of a private Korea firm with investments in the Alberta Oil Sands; meetings at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; discussions with analysts at a Korean political “think tank”; discussions with officials at Hyundai; breakfast session with former Foreign Minister Dr. Young-Kwan Yoon. There was also a special overnight stay for a traditional cultural experience at a Korean Temple. Meals, exercise sessions, and an opportunity to observe a traditional Korean life-style are included. The Trip was headed up by Seong-ik Oh, who is an MA from the Kennedy School and a Ph.D. at SAIS, Seong-ik Oh led the Kennedy School trip to South Korea. He is a former official at the Korean Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. He is also an official at the director level at the Korean Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs. All transportation, lodging, and meals were covered for each student. The Canadian Studies program was jointly organized by Charles Doran and Seong-ik Oh. Canadian Studies Energy Trip 2009 (March 15 to March 21) – The Canadian Studies Program traveled to Calgary, Edmonton and Fort McMurray. Students and faculty met with top policy makers with regards to oil and natural gas policy in the Alberta public and private sectors. The visit included stops at University of Calgary, University of Edmonton and the oil sands projects in Fort McMurray. Issues involving energy exploration and development energy research, and environmental impacts were discussed with provincial and private sector officials. The Center of Canadian Studies Biennial Trip
Ottawa, Montreal & Quebec City
Those concentrating in the Western Hemisphere Program will be eligible to participate in a biennial, week-long series of meetings with top policymakers in Ottawa, Montreal, and Quebec City. Preference will be given to those students selecting Canadian Studies as their concentration.
