Bernard L. Schwartz is chairman and CEO of BLS Investments, LLC, a private investment firm based in New York City. In March 2006, Mr. Schwartz retired as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Loral Space & Communications after 34 years of service.
Over the years, Mr. Schwartz has been recognized for his views and counsel on matters ranging from economic growth and industrial policy to technology and national security. SchwartzÃ_ views tend to challenge conventional wisdom and provide a basis for numerous speeches, white papers and testimony to private research institutions, educators and congressional committees. He has established several permanent programs and chairs at various institutions to study economic and public policy development, including Johns Hopkins UniversityÃ_s School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS), the New School University, the Asia Society, the Brookings Institution, Tel Aviv University, and the Council on Foreign Relations.
Mr. Schwartz serves as a trustee of the New York University Hospitals Center, the New York Historical Society, Thirteen/WNET Educational Broadcasting Corporation and Baruch College. In addition, he is the vice chairman of the New York Film Society, a director of the New America Foundation, where he supports its fellowship program, and chairman of the board of trustees of Third Way, a progressive advocacy organization. He is also a supporter of the Democratic Leadership Council.
It is Mr. Schwartz's belief that the growth in world productivity can provide the resources to resolve many of the problems that appear to be ñ or are claimed to be ñ the consequences of globalization. It is in this spirit that he has decided to support a serious academic inquiry into the factors contributing to growth in global productivity and policies that can help sustain that growth and distribute its benefits so that they are shared more widely.
Mr. Schwartz graduated from City College of New York with a B.S. Degree in Finance and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Science degree from the college.
