Online Principles of Economics
Section 1: May 1 - July 25, 2013
Section 2: May 22 - August 15, 2013
Online Principles of Economics is a 12-week fully online course available to incoming SAIS degree students that covers economics at an introductory level. This course satisfies the economics pre-requisites for incoming SAIS MA students. SAIS offers two sections of the course and students may participate from anywhere in the world as long as they have regular high-speed Internet access and are able to meet additional technical requirements.
This course is intended for students who have not yet completed their economics pre-requisites or those who would like to reacquaint themselves with the fundamental theories of economics prior to entering SAIS.
Math Preparation
Math plays an integral part in building the type of sound understanding of economics you will be expected to develop as a SAIS student. All incoming SAIS students will receive access to an online course in Blackboard that will provide resources such as video tutorials, lessons, problem sets and quizzes to assist you in this preparation. Students are strongly encouraged to work through the material prior to their arrival at SAIS. By tackling these math skills, your experience at SAIS will be easier, more enjoyable and much more rewarding.
Students will be given access to the Blackboard site in mid-May if they have submitted their matriculation fees.
Note: Students taking economics in Pre-Term DC (see below) must pass the math exams at the end of the online Blackboard course. TAs will be available during Pre-Term DC to assist those who need additional math support.
Pre-Term
Washington DC - July 29 - August 27, 2013
Bologna, Italy - August 21, 2013 – September 17, 2013
Pre-Term DC is a full-time program that provides the opportunity for incoming SAIS students to get a jump-start on their study of economics, statistics or English, and get re-acclimated to the academic world. Participants will also meet fellow classmates, deans and recent alumni during informal events. Pre-Term runs during the month prior to the regular fall academic term. Although Pre-Term is optional, the majority of the incoming class attends.
Participants may enroll in Microeconomics, Statistics and, if eligible, Macroeconomics. Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at SAIS are taught at the intermediate level and use basic calculus, such as functions and derivatives. Pre-Term also gives non-native English speakers the chance to strengthen their language skills by registering for the English course. Students participating in Pre-Term at SAIS Bologna have the additional option of taking intensive Italian during Pre-Term.
We strongly encourage students to review the Pre-Calculus and Calculus Blackboard sites and take the exams prior to arriving at Pre-Term in order to assess your understanding of the material. Those who do not take or pass the online math exams prior to the start of Pre-Term will be given the opportunity to take the exams on the first day of the program. Those who do not pass the exams will be required to participate in math review sessions during Pre-Term.
Additional details regarding Pre-Term will be made available on the matriculated students’ site in mid-May.
Summer Programs
