Academic Technology

SAIS offers a wide range of other academic technology products and support.  For more information or assistance, please visit the Academic Technology Web page or contact Nathan Kreps, Manager of Academic Technology, at nkreps@jhu.edu or 202.663.5652.  You may also drop by N414a anytime during regular working hours.

Blackboard
SAIS employs the Blackboard (Bb) online course management system.  Bb offers a wide range of web-based tools that can help you manage your course activities, communicate with students, and offer dynamic instructional content online.  It boasts an easy-to-use interface that can be customized to suit the particular needs of your courses.  It also reflects the ongoing trend in higher education toward engaging learners through the thoughtful application of technology tools.

Bb is the sole method of accessing the library's electronic reserves (ERes) system.  Every course will have a companion Bb site, accessible with a JHED ID and password.  Each course site will include a link to ERes and a copy of your course syllabus.  We do not require that you use the Bb system beyond those basic features, but we strongly encourage you to take advantage of the service in other, more creative ways.  You may use it to share presentations and lecture notes, host online class discussions, post course announcements, and much more.  The Manager of Academic Technology is available to help you plan and implement those course enhancements.

ISIS

ISIS is a university-wide web-based student information system. Using your computer, an internet connection, and most supported web browsers, you will be able to view your rosters, view information about your students (including contact information), and submit grades. Download the ISIS Guide for Faculty for instructions on how to sign in, view your roster, email your class, and enter grades.

If you require additional assistance, please visit the ISIS Help Website or contact the Help Desk at 410-516-HELP.

 JCard

Identification cards (JCards) can be picked up in the Nitze Computer Lab, 3rd floor.  Faculty can either submit a passport-size photo or sit for a picture during lab hours.  Members of the SAIS community may use their JCards to gain entry into school buildings after 6 p.m. and check out books from the library.

Textbooks

SAIS uses MBS Direct, an online-only vendor, to provide textbooks to students.  In order to utilize this service efficiently, we must provide MBS with advanced notice of a list of textbooks and materials required for all courses.  To request your textbook(s), submit your syllabus to the academic coordinator for your program (see Contact List below).  Book lists of all classes for which orders have been submitted can be viewed online at http://bookstore.mbsdirect.net/sais-jhu.htm.

Johns Hopkins University has an obligation under the Maryland College Textbook Competition and Affordability Act and under the federal Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) to follow the laws intended to lower the cost of textbooks by ensuring that faculty, staff and students have appropriate options and pertinent and timely information when selecting and purchasing textbooks.  The University also encourages early selection and adoption of textbooks and course materials in advance of each semester so that students may have opportunity to explore budget-sensitive options.

To comply with the Maryland law, all faculty must acknowledge receipt of the following information from the publisher as they consider selection of textbooks and course materials:  title; author; publisher; edition; International Standard Book Number (ISBN); price; substantial content revisions between current and previous editions of textbooks; availability of materials as bundled or unbundled; other available formats (e.g., paperback or unbound); and, a list of textbooks classified as integrated books.   The University encourages all faculty to consider this information prior to selection of textbooks each semester for their courses.   The University has made arrangements with all University textbook vendors to provide the requisite information to faculty.  Your academic coordinator can help to provide you with this information via our textbook vendor MBS Direct.

Syllabi

Faculty should provide a syllabus to the SAIS Library.  Making changes after your first class can cause difficulties.  The syllabus is your contract with the students and should reflect 1) what they are to learn and understand; 2) how they should go about learning the material (reading, writing, listening, class discussion); and 3) how they will be evaluated on what they have learned (including grading policies on attendance, class participation, late assignments, etc).  Clarity in the syllabus removes uncertainty for both the student and instructor.

General Information

Academic Board

The Academic Board consists of the tenured members of the faculty and such other members it may vote to include each year.  The Board's principal duties are to recruit and recommend appointments and promotions to the faculty.  It also advises the Dean on policy issues that cannot properly or conveniently be considered by the whole faculty or by administrators alone.
