Francis Fukuyama, director of the SAIS International Development Program, introduced the event, and Thomas Schelling, 2005 winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, provided commentary.

| This conference on Friday, November 30 celebrated the 25th anniversary of the SAIS Conflict Management Program, addressing the pressing issues surrounding conflicts in Colombia, Israel and Palestine, Iran, North Korea and Sudan as well as conflicts related to the environment. The panel about Sudan featured Steven Morrison, chair of the Africa Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies; Andrew S. Natsios, the president’s special envoy for Sudan; and Stephen Smith, a professor at Duke University's Department of African and African American Studies.

| SAIS Team Takes First Place in Thunderbird Sustainable Innovation Summit Challenge A team of five SAIS students finished in first place out of more than 100 teams competing in the Sustainable Innovation Summit Challenge hosted November 8-10 by Thunderbird School of Global Management in Glendale, Ariz. SAIS was the only non-MBA school participant in the group of 10 teams from around the world in the final round of the competition. Congratulations to team members Tania Askins, Chris Meyer, Michael Ralles, Sarah Rotman and Genevieve Taft who took home a $20,000 prize. Click here for more information.
| SAIS Professor Charles Gati Receives Book Award Charles Gati, SAIS senior adjunct professor of Russian and Eurasian Studies, is the winner of the 2007 Marshall Shulman Book Award for his 2006 book, Failed Illusions: Moscow, Washington, Budapest, and the 1956 Hungarian Revolt. The prize, awarded annually by the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS) in cooperation with Columbia University's Harriman Institute, is for "an outstanding monograph dealing with the international relations, foreign policy or foreign-policy decision-making of any of the states of the former Soviet Union or Eastern Europe."  More than 50 SAIS alumni returned to campus October 10-12 for the school's first Alumni College featuring a series of classes, events and speeches revolving around the theme, "Ideals and Self-Interest in American Foreign Policy: Reassessing Global Risks and Opportunities." Keynote speakers included fellow SAIS graduates Jim Leach, former Iowa congressman; Edward Morse, Lehman Brothers managing director and chief energy economist; Chester Crocker, former assistant secretary of State for African Affairs; and R. Nicholas Burns, under secretary of State for Political Affairs.

| SAIS Held Discussion on Condoleezza Rice's Role in Bush Administration on September 6 SAIS hosted an event on Thursday, September 6 to discuss Washington Post diplomatic correspondent Glenn Kessler’s new book, The Confidante: Condoleezza Rice and the Creation of the Bush Legacy. Kessler made introductory remarks, followed by a panel discussion about the book. Panelists included James Mann, SAIS Foreign Policy Institute author-in-residence, and Don Oberdorfer, chairman of the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS.
