International Relations of Asia (AsiaIR) Specialization
Students concentrating in China Studies, Japan Studies, Korea Studies, South Asia Studies, or Southeast Asia Studies have the option of pursuing a specialization in the International Relations of Asia (AsiaIR). AsiaIR offers students a way to focus on Asia as a whole and on the international relationships and trends that are increasingly knitting the region together. In AsiaIR, students will take courses on region-wide subjects while also meeting the course and language requirements of one of the five Asian regional concentrations. Students specializing in AsiaIR are encouraged to participate in the Asian Studies student conference.
AsiaIR SPECIALIZATION
Students electing to pursue an AsiaIR specialization must fulfill the requirements of one of the following concentrations:
Generally, these concentrations require students to complete 6 courses: 4 courses from their primary area (China, Japan, South Asia, or Southeast Asia) and 2 courses from the other Asia areas. The exception to this is Korea Studies, which requires students to take 3 courses from their primary area (Korea), 1 course from China Studies, 1 course from Japan Studies and 1 course from any non-Korea Asia area.
To earn the Asia IR specialization, students must complete a minimum of 8 courses between the concentration and specialization. Of these 8 courses, students must complete at least 4 courses relevant to the international relations of Asia from the AsiaIR course listing. Additionally, students must complete Theories of International Relations as one of the Core requirements for the MA degree.
South Asia Studies and Southeast Asia Studies concentrators are encouraged to take additional courses on the international relations of Asia and Northeast Asia to complement their courses on South and/or Southeast Asia.
