Lampton Awarded Prize for Asia Scholarship The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars awarded David M. Lampton, director of the SAIS China Studies Program and dean of faculty, the inaugural Scalapino Prize on June 17 at the 2010 Asia Policy Assembly in Washington, D.C. The prize grants Lampton $50,000 and honors the legacy of Robert Scalapino, a noted scholar of Asia who worked to enhance relations between the region and the United States for more than 60 years. The NBR and the Wilson Center recognized Lampton’s “exceptional contributions to America’s understanding of the vast changes under way in Asia.” In presenting the award, Richard J. Ellings, president of NBR, underscored Lampton’s academic achievements by stating, “If you haven’t figured [the winner] out by now, you’re not in the field.” Lampton was honored for his paper on “Power Constrained: Sources of Mutual Strategic Suspicion in U.S.-China Relations.” He has also written 38 books and more than 600 journal articles on engagement between the two countries.
