JHU SAIS and Texas Tech to Host Conference on Applying Vietnam Lessons in Iraq and Afghanistan

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Texas Tech University’s Vietnam Center and Archive will hold a two-day conference, “Lessons Learned, Lessons Lost: Counterinsurgency From Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan,” on Thursday, March 4 from 8:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday, March 5 from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Experts from academia, government, the military and think tanks will speak throughout the conference at the following sessions:

Thursday, March 4
9 a.m. Welcoming Remarks by William Wise, associate director of the SAIS Southeast Asia Studies Program, and Steve Maxner, director of the Texas Tech Vietnam Center
10 a.m. “Developing a Strategic Policy for Civil-Military Operations (CMO) in Vietnam”
1:15 p.m. “From Strategy to Tactics: CMO Operations in Vietnam
3 p.m. “Assessing the Vietnam Experience”

Friday, March 5
9 a.m. “Counterinsurgency Operations in Iraq”
11 a.m. “Counterinsurgency Operations in Afghanistan”
12:45 p.m. “Lessons Learned, Lessons Lost”
2:45 p.m. Concluding Remarks

Admittance to the conference is by invitation only. However, this event is open to the media for coverage. The conference will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the school’s Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C.
