JHU SAIS and Human Rights Watch to Host Burma Conference

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and Human Rights Watch will hold a one-day conference, “A Return to Civilian Rule? The Prospects for Democracy and Rights in Burma After the Election,” on Wednesday, October 20 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize-winning economist and Harvard University’s Lamont University Professor, will give the conference’s keynote address at 11 a.m. Experts from international organizations, NGOs and academia will speak throughout the day in the following sessions:

9 a.m.           Opening Remarks by William Wise, associate director of the SAIS Southeast Asia Studies Program, and Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch

9:15 a.m.      Panel 1: “Politics and the November 2010 Election”

11 a.m.         Keynote address by Amartya Sen

12:45 p.m.    Panel 2: “Human Rights and Efforts at Accountability”

2:30 p.m.      Panel 3: “Regional Perspectives and Responsibilities”

4 p.m.           Closing Remarks

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Kenney Auditorium of the school’s Nitze Building, located at 1740 Massachusetts Ave., N.W., Washington, D.C. Members of the public should register online at http://burmaconference.eventbrite.com/.
