Senator Chuck Hagel to Give Keynote Address at JHU SAIS/NBR Conference on Asia

The Johns Hopkins Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) will hold a conference, “Challenges and Choices in Asia,” on Thursday, September 18 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The SAIS China Studies Program is co-sponsoring this event with the National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR). The presentations will be based on NBR’s recently published volume Strategic Asia 2008-09: Challenges and Choices, which addresses the major strategic choices of Asia facing the new U.S. president and more broadly, the policy community.

Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.), will give the conference’s keynote address at 9:40 a.m. Expert speakers from academia, think tanks and government will speak throughout the morning in the following panel sessions:

8:30 a.m.      Opening remarks
8:40 a.m.      “U.S. Power in Asia”
9:10 a.m.      “China and Japan”
9:40 a.m.      Keynote address by Hagel
10:15 a.m.   “Russia and India”
10:45 a.m.    Q&A with audience
11:15 a.m.    Concluding remarks
