Three U.S. journalists have been awarded International Reporting Project (IRP) Fellowships at the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) for the fall 2007 program. The fellowships, which are aimed at encouraging coverage of international issues by the U.S. news media, began in mid-September at SAIS. This fall’s IRP Fellows comprise the 19th group selected since the program was created in 1998. In the 10 years of the program, 148 IRP Fellows have reported from more than 80 different countries, focusing on important stories that have been neglected or under-reported. The IRP Fellows for fall 2007, their affiliations and the countries on which they will focus are:

Libby Casey, reporter, KUAC-FM public radio, Fairbanks, Alaska - Iceland
Krista Kapralos, reporter, The Herald, Everett, Washington - Venezuela “We’re looking forward to some great work by these talented IRP Fellows,” said IRP director John Schidlovsky. “The public needs to know about the issues these journalists plan to cover, which include global health, energy and environment and indigenous peoples.” The five-week fellowships are offered in the fall of each year. In addition to the individual IRP Fellows, the program runs a “Gatekeeper Editors” fellowship program, which takes senior editors overseas twice a year on fact-finding trips. The next Gatekeepers trip is to Korea in November.
