SAIS Blog Guidelines

The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of The Johns Hopkins University is now offering blogs to student groups, academic programs, administrative offices, research centers and individual faculty at SAIS. SAIS does not offer personal blogs to students.

Blog authors are expected to adhere to all applicable Johns Hopkins University and SAIS policies, as well as local, state and federal laws. In addition, authors are expected to exercise their own good judgment and common sense when posting materials to a SAIS blog.

Official policies include, but are not limited to:

Before being made generally available to the public, every blog must include the following disclaimer in the footer: “The views and opinions expressed in this page are strictly those of the page author(s). The contents of this page have not been reviewed and approved by the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies of The Johns Hopkins University.”

  • All materials published on SAIS blogs including text, images, audio and video must adhere to U.S. and international copyright law.
  • All quotes or excerpts taken from other sources must be attributed to their author(s) – quotes taken from electronic sources, such as blogs or Web sites, must be linked to the source.
  • All blogs must be written in a polite, civil and professional manner – use of offensive language, hate speech or sexually explicit material is strictly prohibited.
  • All user names must be derived from the author’s real name – for example, acceptable user names for someone named “John Smith,” are “jsmith,” “johnsmith,” “johns,” etc.
  • Although debate over ideas is acceptable, authors should refrain from personal attacks on other individuals, particularly SAIS students, faculty and staff.
  • Blogs may not be used to promote any commercial or personal business activities not authorized by SAIS.
  • Commercial or non-profit advertising on SAIS blogs is strictly prohibited.

Coverage of speakers and events, both at SAIS and elsewhere, must adhere to basic journalistic standards:

  • Blog authors must confirm that events are on the record before posting quotes and transcripts on their blogs.
  • All quotes and transcripts should be as accurate as possible.
  • When in doubt, ask the speaker for permission before posting.
  • The SAIS Office of Communications, which is responsible for administering the SAIS blog service, reserves the right delete content, at any time, at its sole discretion, that it deems in violation university policy, or local, federal and state law.
