Alumni CollegeDon't Miss Out on the First SAIS Alumni College This October in Washington
Alumni College, to be held this October 10-12 at the SAIS campus in Washington, D.C., will feature a series of interactive classes, events and keynote speeches revolving around the theme, "Ideals and Self-Interest in American Foreign Policy: Reassessing Global Risks and Opportunities." Fred Starr, Chairman, CACISAIS Hosted Forum on Transport and Trade in Greater Central Asia on July 18
On Wednesday, July 18, S. Frederick Starr, chairman of the SAIS Central Asia-Caucasus Institute, hosted a forum to launch the book The New Silk Roads: Transport and Trade in the Greater Central Asia. Starr, who edited the work, and several of the book's contributors -- Masood Aziz, Aftab Kazi, Abbas Maleki, Niklas Norling and Taleh Ziyadov -- discussed how trade was again becoming possible throughout Eurasia, while representatives from Central Asian trade ministries provided brief remarks. Jack PrichardSAIS Hosted Forum on U.S. Diplomacy With North Korea on July 17
Jack Pritchard, president of the Korea Economic Institute and former U.S. special envoy for negotiations with North Korea, discussed his new book, Failed Diplomacy: The Tragic Story of How North Korea Got the Bomb, at SAIS on Tuesday, July 17. Richard Bush, senior fellow and director of the Center for Northeast Asian Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution, and Don Oberdorfer, chairman of the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS, also provided commentary at this event. Pam FalhertySAIS Graduate Pam Flaherty to Chair JHU Board of Trustees
Pamela P. Flaherty, a 1968 SAIS graduate and president and CEO of Citigroup Foundation, will take office on July 1 as the 15th chair of The Johns Hopkins University Board of Trustees. Flaherty, who has led the SAIS Advisory Council since 2003, is the first SAIS graduate and the first woman to chair the board of trustees. Click here for JHU's announcement. HNC Anniversary eventHopkins-Nanjing Center Celebrated 20th Anniversary in June
On June 22 and 23, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center for Chinese and American Studies hosted its 20th anniversary celebration and reunion at the Nanjing campus. The celebration culminated in the presentation of an award to former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. Other events included the 2007 graduation ceremony, keynote address by Kissinger, alumni dinners, panel discussions, building dedication, concert and gala ball.

On Thursday, June 14 and Friday, June 15, the SAIS Center for Transatlantic Relations and the American Security Project (ASP) hosted a symposium, "Shaping a Sensible Strategy to Ensure America's National Security: A Conversation About Values, Issues and Solutions." Featured speakers included Gary Hart, former senator (D-Colo.) and ASP board chairman, and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.).

SAIS Hosted Forum on Global Peace Index on June 12
SAIS and Search for Common Ground co-hosted a forum, "The Global Peace Index: Its Value and Implications and the Next Steps," on Tuesday, June 12. Panelists included Charles Dambach, Alliance for Peacebuilding president and CEO; Harriet Mayor Fulbright, president of the J. William and Harriet Fulbright Center; Michael Lund, specialist for conflict and peacebuilding at Management Systems International, Inc.; John McDonald, Institute for Multi-Track Diplomacy chairman and CEO; and Ola Storberg, Norwegian Embassy first secretary. The GPI ranks the peacefulness of 121 nations by analyzing 24 indicators of internal and external peacefulness and correlating them with other factors. Norway ranks first, and the United States is 96th.

The SAIS Center on Politics and Foreign Relations and the Financial Times hosted "Democratic Forum on Iraq: Presidential Candidates Present Their Views," on Wednesday, June 6. Yang Seung HeeSAIS Hosted Event to Celebrate 125 Years of U.S.-Korea Relations on May 21
The U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS, KORUS House and the Sejong Society hosted an event, "U.S.-Korea Relations: Celebrating 125 Years of Friendship," on Monday, May 21 featuring remarks by Don Oberdorfer, chairman of the U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS; Tae-sik Lee, South Korean ambassador to the United States and a SAIS graduate; Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy; and John Endicott, a Korea scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology. Festivities also included Yang Seung Hee performing songs of friendship on the stringed kayageum.
