The U.S.-Korea Institute at SAIS and The Hwaejeong Peace Foundation of the Dong-A-Ilbo hosted a conference, "Forging a 21st Century U.S.-Korea Aliance: Identifying Obstacles and Opportunities," on Tuesday, May 6. This day-long conference featured three keynote speakers: Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-N.Y.), who spoke on "A Congressional Perspective on U.S.-Korea Relations;" Rep. Ed Royce (R-Calif.), who spoke on "Gauging the Six-Party Talks;" and Jay Lefkowitz, special envoy for human rights in North Korea for the U.S. State Department, who spoke on "Human Rights in the U.S. Policy Toward North Korea."

The SAIS Bologna Center and the U.S. Embassy in Rome hosted a mock U.S. presidential debate on Friday, April 18, at the embassy. Erik Jones, professor of European studies at the Bologna Center, played the part of the Democratic candidates and Bart Drakulich, the center's director of finance and administration, played the role of the Republican candidate for an audience of Italian university students. Steven Anderson from the embassy's political section moderated the debate, and Ambassador Ronald Spogli gave welcoming remarks (in Italian).
