Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley Visited Hopkins-Nanjing Center on June 3-4 Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley visited the Hopkins-Nanjing Center (HNC) on June 3 and 4 during his 10-day economic development mission to Asia which included stops in China, South Korea and Vietnam. O'Malley spoke to HNC students at the center on Friday, June 3, and watched the HNC dragon boat team place third in Nanjing's annual Dragon Boat Festival on Saturday, June 4.
SAIS Hosted Event Celebrating Radio Free Europe on June 2 On Thursday, June 2, SAIS and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) celebrated the 60th anniversary of RFE's first broadcasts to Czechoslovakia at an event entitled "No Freedom Without Media Freedom. Speakers included Walter Isaacson, Aspen Institute president and Broadcasting Board of Governors chair; Thomas A. Dine, American Friends of the Czech Republic president and former RFE/RL president; Karel Schwarzenberg, first deputy prime minister and minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic; Golnaz Esfandiari, RFE/RL senior correspondent; Carl Gershman, National Endowment for Democracy president; David Kramer, Freedom House executive director; and Husain Haqqani, Pakistani ambassador to the United States.
