General News Sources

Access World News
Full-text content of over 1,300 local and regional newspapers from the US and around the world. Note that many, but not all, of these papers are also available on LexisNexis.

Google News
Though lacking some of the sophisticated search features of LexisNexis and other subscription news sources, Google News is nonetheless a powerful tool for identifying news sources.  If your results indicate there is a charge for an article, we may have free access via LexisNexis, Access World News, or Proquest

LexisNexis
One of our top sources for news. Access to non-graphical full-text of hundreds of newspapers, news magazines, and news digests. Beginning coverage varies depending on the source, but most sources appear online within a day or two of publication.

Note: In August '07, Lexis underwent a major interface upgrade. Check out our LexisNexis Tip Sheet for some tricks to maximize good results in the new Lexis.

Press Display
An online viewer for current editions of 250 international newspapers. You can use a traditional 2-page newspaper view, table of contents, or "zoom in" to specific articles. It archives only the last 60 days, so LexisNexis is better for older news.

Readers’ Guide
Indexes popular news magazines such as Time, Newsweek, Far Eastern Economic Review, etc. Provides abstracts and some full-text. Online coverage is from 1983 to present. Readers’ Guide Retro extends coverage from 1890 to 1982.

World News Connection
English language translations of foreign television and radio broadcasts, and selected newspaper and journal articles, from 1995 to present. These are materials that would not normally be published in English. Regions covered are: Central Eurasia, China, East Asia, Eastern Europe, Near East & South Asia, Sub Saharan Africa, The Americas and Western Europe. For coverage prior to 1996, see the Library’s microfiche collection of Foreign Broadcast Information Service Daily Reports (also known as FBIS). An index to the FBIS Daily Reports is online.

Tips: We recommend using the Advanced Search screen.

Historical News Sources

America's Historical Newspapers
Covering 1690 - 1876, this database allows researchers with interests in the late-17th through 19th centuries to search and view newspapers from the time period. Full PDF images are available. At present, over 80 newspapers are included. Please note that JHU has access to Series I only.

Google News Archive
Google News Archive includes newspaper articles back to the 19th century. If your results indicate there is a charge for an article, we may have free access via LexisNexis, Proquest, or one of the other historical news sources listed here.

Historical Newspapers Online
Includes Palmer's Index to the Times (of London), covering the years 1790-1905; The Official Index to the Times (of London), covering the years 1906-1980; and The Historical Index to the New York Times, covering the years 1851-1923.
