Online coverage: 1971 to present.
A bibliographic database, with abstracts and some full-text, of articles appearing in business and economics periodicals.

Academic Search Premier
Full text for over 4,000 publications, including more than 2,700 peer-reviewed publications. In addition to the full text, the database offers indexing and abstracts for 5,000 journals and PDF backfiles for more than 100 top scholarly academic journals, dating back as far as 1965 or the first issue published (whichever is more recent).

AccuNet  / AP Multimedia Archive
An electronic library containing the Associated Press's current photos and a selection of pictures from their 50 million+ image library. The database also includes charts, graphs, tables, audio and maps.

Africa-Wide: NiPAD
An aggregation of 40 bibliographic databases from around the world, offering multi-disciplinary coverage of African studies.  The database includes references to journal articles, research reports, grey literature, media transcripts, books, and theses; and some links to full text.

African Abstracts

American Civil War Research Database 
This includes a record for virtually every soldier who served in the Civil War. There are descriptions of thousands of battles, with detailed multi-page battle orders and reports. Use the analysis tools to visualize trends in Confederate and Union losses, regimental dynamics, and soldier statistics. 

America History And Life
Online coverage: 1954 to present.
Indexes articles on the history of the U.S. and Canada, and articles dealing with current American life and times, with abstracts. Also indexes selected books.

American Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (ABSEES)
Online coverage: 1990 to present. 
Produced at the University of Illinois, ABSEES indexes journal articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, dissertations, and selected government publications on East-Central Europe and the former Soviet Union published in the U.S. and Canada.

American National Biography 
A standard source for U.S. historical biography, includes over 17,400 biographies of Americans. The ANB Online includes illustrations, cross-references, bibliographies, and links to external web sites.

American Periodical Series Online (1740 - 1900)  
This valuable collection contains digitized images of the pages of American magazines and journals that originated between 1741 and 1900. The full-text of the contents are searchable. Periodicals may be browsed by title and date. 

Applied Science and Technology Abstracts
Online coverage: October 1983 to present, with abstracts from 1993. 
Indexes over 400 English-language periodicals in the applied sciences and technology, including energy-related disciplines. Includes some full text articles. 
 

Arab-Israeli Relations 1917-1970. Middle East Series 1 
This collection offers access to the full text of British government records documenting the history of the Arab-Israeli conflict from 1917-1970.

ArcGIS 
A widely-used geospatial mapping program, which can be used with the researcher’s own data or with datasets (including census data and world-wide topographical maps). Includes manuals and web-based training. Archive Finder
Indexes collections of private papers and archival materials throughout the U.S. It incorporates the contents of the National Union Catalog of Manuscript Collections (NUCMC), the National Inventory of Documentary Sources (NIDS), and the Directory of Archives and Manuscript Depositories in the U.S. (DAMRUS).

ArchiveGrid
A database for locating special collections worldwide, including corporate histories, personal papers, and historical records. Over 2,500 libraries, museums, and archives worldwide contribute collection descriptions.

Armed Conflict Database 
Produced by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), this database covers international and internal conflicts, as well as terrorism. It provides an interactive source of information on 70 armed conflicts including terrorism, refugees and returnees, Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), weapons use / flows, fatalities, costs ($US), historical backgrounds, annual updates and timelines. Users can generate reports and download data as well as browse through year-by-year analyses and fact sheets online.

Balance Of Payments
Time series data from 1948 summarizing the economic transactions of an economy with the rest of the world. It reports total goods, services, factor income, and current transfers an economy receives from or provides to the rest of the world as well as capital transfers and changes in each economy's external financial claims and liabilities.

China Academic Journals Database
This database provides full text access back to 1994 of over 5,000 Chinese academic journals, including 2,000 in the social sciences and humanities. Text in Chinese with English abstracts.

China Data Online
From the China Data Center at the University of Michigan, this database provides full text access to a collection of Chinese statistical yearbooks, including  national and provincial yearbooks and industrial data. Note: JHU's subscription does not include the Census material. 

China: Trade, Politics and Culture 1793-1980 
A digital database providing a wide variety of original source material detailing China’s interaction with the West from 1793 to 1980.     

Chronicle of Higher Education
The academic world's top source of news and information, the Chronicle of Higher Education online includes daily updates as well as supplements that do not appear in the print edition. The complete contents of the newspaper, printed each Friday, are available on the website the following Monday morning. In addition to the current issue, the archive of more than 12 years of the Chronicle is available and fully searchable.

Congressional Research Service (CRS) Reports (via Lexis Congressional) 
Full-text coverage from 1916 to present. These useful policy papers are prepared by the Congressional Research Service, a branch of the Library of Congress whose mission is to provide nonpartisan research reports to members of the U.S. House and Senate. Once in LexisNexis Congressional, select "Advanced Search" and "CRS Reports."

Countrydata.com 
Published by the PRS Group, this database offers over 75 country risk-related variables for more than 150 countries, including risk ratings and economic data from the PRS Group's International Country Risk Guide, as well as forecasts, economic, political, geographic, and social data from the PRS Group's Political Risk Services.  Updated monthly, with historical data back to 1984. Results can be downloaded into Excel. For access to the Political Risk Yearbook, see Business Source Premier. For access to the International Country Risk Guide and Political Risk Services, see LexisNexis.

Digital National Security Archive 
This database, created by the National Security Archive, contains more than 40,000 declassified documents relating to major U.S. national security issues. The National Security Archive, located at George Washington University, is a non-profit research institute on international affairs, a library and archive of declassified U.S. documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act.

Direction of Trade 
Contains time series data from 1980 on the value of merchandise exports and imports between each country and all its trading partners. It reports total bilateral and multilateral exports and imports aggregated at national or regional group level.

Disclosure Corporate Snapshots
Corporate and financial information on more than 11,000 U.S. corporations. 

Dissertations and Theses 
Online coverage: 1861 to present (abstracts from 1980, full text from 1997). 
ProQuest's Dissertations and Theses is an index, with abstracts, to virtually every doctoral dissertation completed in the U.S. at accredited institutions since 1861. Some masters theses and foreign language dissertations are also included. Please note that many of the dissertations published since 1997 are available as PDF downloads free of charge.
 Note: Full text is now showing up for some pre-1997 titles.

Dun and Bradstreet's Million Dollar Database
Provides information on over 1,260,000 U.S. leading public and private businesses. Company information includes industry information with up to 24 individual 8-digit SICs, size criteria (employees and annual sales), type of ownership, principal executives and biographies. Geographic criteria and zip code ranges may be specified. Sorting options for results are possible.  

Econlit with Fulltext
Online coverage: 1969 to present. 
Econlit provides coverage of worldwide economic literature. Includes journals, proceedings, and some books.

Economist Intelligence Unit

  • EIU Country Reports (Monthly) and Profiles (Annual): These offer concise analysis and background information on the economic and political situation of over 180 countries. They include some stats and are particularly valuable for their analysis.
  • EIU Country Data: Economic indicators and forecasts covering more than 320 economic series for 150 countries, as well as regional aggregates, running from 1980 and forecasting ahead five years.
  • EIU Market Indicators and Forecasts: Economic, demographic, consumption, and industry data on 60 major countries, back to 1990 and forecasting ahead five years.
  • EIU Country Commerce: Operating conditions, commercial laws and business regulations in 55+ countries.
  • EIU Country Risk: Measures the poltical, economic policy/structure and liquidity risk of activities in 120 emerging markets.
  • EIU Risk Briefing: Analysis, forecasts, and background data covering a range of risk factors, with a focus on emerging markets. Risk Tracker, on the left margin, is a customisable tool to track changes in risk ratings. Eighteenth Century Collections Online

EISIL: Electronic Information System for International Law

Electronic Encyclopedia of American Government  
A suite of six databases that serve the needs of anyone interested in American government and society. Includes CQ Researcher, CQ Electronic Encyclopedia of American Government,  CQ Insider, CQ Public Affairs Collection, CQ Supreme Court Collection and CQ Weekly.

Encyclopedia Britannica Online
Available both online and in print. The online version of Encyclopaedia Britannica includes links to related web sites.

Encyclopædia Iranica is an extensive compendium on the past and present culture of the people who speak an Iranian language and their context in broader world history.

This database includes thousands of association listings.

Encyclopedia of Islam 
Covers the Islamic World from religion and history to politics and culture. The geographical and historical scope encompasses the old Arabo-Islamic empire, the Islamic countries of Iran, Central Asia, the Indian sub-continent and Indonesia, the Ottoman Empire and all modern Islamic states.

Environment Index  
Provides abstract/index information to over 1000 titles covering environmental policy and studies. There is ongoing coverage for over 500 of those titles. An Environment thesaurus is available to assist with advanced searching.

E-STAT
This database is Statistics Canada's interactive warehouse of statistics about Canada. It includes such publications such as Canadian Social Trends, Health Reports, Human Activity and the Environment, Juristat and many others. There are over 2,400 tables tracking trends in virtually every aspect of the lives of Canadians. NOTE: this database cannot be accessed off campus.

Europa World   
A major reference source providing detailed surveys of over 250 countries, with an emphasis on political and economic information.  The database also includes a listing of over 1,650 international organizations.

European Bibliography of Slavic and East European Studies (EBSEES)

Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) Electronic Index
Provides an index to the the FBIS Daily Reports, which contain English translations of news gathered from foreign radio and television broadcasts, news agency transmissions, newspapers, periodicals, and government statements.  The FBIS Daily Reports themselves are available on microfiche through 1996 in the Library's Microforms Room. For more precise holdings information, see the Library's catalog. In 1996, the U.S. government phased out its print publication of FBIS Daily Reports. This database is a part of the Newsbank collection; select the FBIS Index from the menu.

Global Books in Print includes all books currently available for sale from publishers in the U.S., U.K., Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, in addition to some forthcoming and out of print titles. The database also includes selected full text reviews.

Global Development Finance Online 
Includes a comprehensive set of tables with statistical data for 136 countries that report debt under the World Bank Debtor Reporting System, as well as summary data for regions and income groups. It also contains data on total external debt stocks and flows, aggregates, and key debt ratios, and provides a detailed, country-by-country picture of debt.  As of March 27, 2008, we are experiencing problems accessing this database from off campus.  We have reported the problem and hope it will be fixed shortly. 

Global Health, 1910-2008 
An international public health database for academics, researchers, public health practitioners, NGOs, policy makers, clinicians, healthcare professionals, and students.  Coverage includes foreign language journals, books, research reports, dissertations, conference proceedings, annual reports, developing country information, and other difficult to obtain material.  NOTE: Access is limited to 2 simultaneous users. 

Global Insight  
Provides comprehensive economic, financial, and political coverage of countries, regions, and industries — covering over 200 countries and spanning more than approximately 170 industries. Note that Global Insight is one way to get statistics online from the International Monetary Fund. To access IMF statistics:

Google Books 
You can
 search the full text of books that Google has scanned for its vast Google Books project. Google is working with, among others, major academic libraries and publishers to digitize the books in their collections. Google Books captures information previously not available via online searching. You get some full text along with snippets or portions of books under 10%. Google Books is a project-in-progress; most books are not yet included.

Google Scholar 
Search across many disciplines /sources for peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers, professional societies, universities and other scholarly organizations. JHU resources have been "activated" to work with Google Scholar, but you first need to configure your browser to see them.

Produced by the Islamic Bibliography Unit at Cambridge University Library, Index Islamicus indexes literature on Islam, the Middle East and the Muslim world. Over 2,000 journals are monitored for inclusion in the database, along with conference proceedings, monographs, multi-authored works and book reviews.

Index to Jewish Periodicals
Provides references to articles in more than 160 English-language journals devoted to Jewish affairs and is intended for students of Jewish thought and contemporary Jewish and Middle Eastern affairs. Journal coverage dates back as far as 1988.

Balance of Payments Statistics
Time series data from 1948 summarizing the economic transactions of an economy with the rest of the world. It reports total goods, services, factor income, and current transfers an economy receives from or provides to the rest of the world as well as capital transfers and changes in each economy's external financial claims and liabilities. 

Direction of Trade
Contains time series data from 1980 on the value of merchandise exports and imports between each country and all its trading partners. A highly selective core list of about 65,000 English language titles in all subjects. It includes both books and electronic resources. RCL aims to describe an ideal "core collection" for the library of a hypothetical college or small university that concentrates on the traditional liberal arts and sciences curriculum. RCL can be helpful when you are trying to identify some key works in a particular subject area, but should not be relied upon for an exhaustive search.

SIRS Researcher 
Online coverage: 1988 to the present. 
A general reference database containing the full text of thousands of articles exploring social, scientific, historic, economic, political, and global issues. Articles are selected from more than 1,200 domestic and international newspapers, magazines, journals, and government publications. 

This free database includes the published recordings owned by the non-profit Smithsonian Folkways Recordings label and the archival audio collections of Folkways Records and other labels. It also includes music recorded around the African continent and material collected by recordists on the South Asian subcontinent. The collection also encompasses animal sounds, beer-drinking at an African homestead; calypso; classical violin instruction; drama; poetry; sounds of the deep ocean, the office, a frog being eaten by a snake; and great performances of traditional music from virtually everywhere in the world.

NetAdvantage is S&P's online academic resource for business information on public and private companies. Services within it include Industry Surveys, Outlook, Stock Reports, Bond Reports, Mutual Fund Reports, Register of Corporations, Company Profiles, and more.

STAT-USA 
Business and economic information from over 50 U.S. government agencies. Includes the National Trade Data Bank, the Commerce Department's Economic Bulletin Board, The Economic Report of the President, Country Commercial Guides, and more.

Testing and Education Reference Center 
This database offers thousands of college and graduate school entries, including information on scholarships and fellowships. Online practice tests and practice exam books are also available, including the PDF version of a practice book for the American Foreign Service Exam.

United Nations Comtrade
UN Comtrade is the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics Database, offering data on trade by commodity and country back to 1962.  A useful article for first time users, with tips on searching, is on the UN Comtrade Knowledge BaseNote: JHU's access to UN Comtrade does not offer the ability to download or save queries.  A nearby library with full access (including downloading) is the UN Information Centre Library at 1775 K St. NW.  You must call first: 202-454-2112.

United Nations Official Documents System  
The official repository for documents published by the United Nations.Provides access to the full text of all UN parliamentary documents issued at UN headquarters in NY and the UN office in Geneva since 1993, as well as the texts of UN resolutions back to 1946, and documents of UNDP, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNHCR, UNHCHR, ECE and UNCTAD.  Click on "Welcome" and then click on "Access ODS without logging in".  No username and password is required.

United Nations STATS Common Database  
Provides selected series from 30 specialized international data sources for all available countries and areas. Among these are 12 types of subject profiles for any country or area, browsing data series by topic and a complete list of international sources used in the Database (such as Food and Agriculture Organization, International Monetary Fund, UN Population Division).  Includes access to multiple UN databases, including the Demographic Yearbook, Joint Oil Data Initiative, Millennium Indicators Database, National Accounts Main Aggregates Database, Social Indicators, and more.

United Nations Treaty Collection 
Full text of treaties and international agreements registered with the UN since 1946 as well as an online version of Status of Multilateral Treaties Deposited with the Secretary-General.  To search for full text treaties, etc., click on "Access to Databases."

Washington Information Directory 
A one-stop source for U.S. governmental and non-governmental organizations. It includes capsule descriptions with specific contact information that is sometimes difficult to find on free Internet sites. The database is searchable by keyword and organization type.

This academic edition of Westlaw includes U.S. federal and state case law from 1654, laws from all 50 states, federal statutes, federal regulations, secondary sources for analysis and background information on legal issues, and hundreds of journals and law reviews from leading law schools.

Wharton Research Data Services (WRDS)
WRDS is a business data research service from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Individual accounts are available to current SAIS students and full-time faculty. Once you've set up a WRDS account, you will have unlimited access via web, SSH, and/or FTP, as well as 750 MB of home/projects storage on a server at Wharton. You will also be eligible to contact Wharton staff for help with database access, data queries, and programming in SAS, FORTRAN, or C.  Click here for instructions on applying for a WRDS account.

Johns Hopkins subscribes to the following WRDS databases:

Compustat includes a full Compustat subscription, a complete back data package and Compustat Global. This collection has data on thousands of companies (active and inactive). more information

Global Insight provides historical and current data on national income accounts, balance of payments, foreign debt, exchange rates, money supply and employment, as well as other national level categories.  Note: Data from the IMF's International Financial Statistics database is included in Global Insight.

NYSE Trade and Quote (TAQ) contains intraday transactions data (trades and quotes) for all securities listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and American Stock Exchange (AMEX), as well as Nasdaq National Market System (NMS) and SmallCap issues. Coverage begins with 1993 and is updated monthly.

The Center for Research in Security Prices (CRSP) maintains a comprehensive collection of security price, return, and volume data for the NYSE, AMEX, and Nasdaq stock markets. Additional CRSP files provide stock indices, beta- and cap-based portfolio, Treasury bond and risk-free rates, and mutual fund databases.

WilsonWeb
Provides access to the several periodical indexes, all of which include abstracts and some full text. These include: Biography Index, Book Review Digest Plus, Business Full Text, Humanities Full Text, Legal Periodicals Full Text, Readers Guide Full Text / Retro, and Social Sciences Full Text.

World Almanac

World Trade Organization (WTO) International Trade Statistics 
Two main features: 1) International Trade Statistics yearbook in PDF, with international trade figures by country, region, and economic sector. 2) Statistics Database, ,with up-to-date WTO stats. Includes search and graphics capabilities, permitting users to examine data in chart, table, or graphical formats, and even to create their own analyses. Compiled and analyzed by the WTO's economists and statisticians.

WorldCat 
Online coverage: approx. 2150 BC to present. 
With close too 100 million records, WorldCat is the world's most comprehensive bibliography. It includes virtually anything that has been cataloged by thousands of participating libraries, including books, serials, archival materials, maps, visual materials, computer files and Internet resources, with 400+ languages represented. Except in rare instances, WorldCat does not include periodical articles. The database offers the option of seeing which libraries in the DC, Maryland, and neighboring states own a particular title. 

Worldscope Global 
Selected financial and descriptive business information derived from corporate annual reports, newspapers, and wire services. 

Worldwide Political Science Abstracts
Provides abstracts and indexing of journals in political science, international relations, law, public policy, and related fields. Many of the articles published since 2000 also include the references cited in the bibliography of the article. Each individual reference may have a link to an abstract and/or to other papers that cite the reference. Pre-1984 indexing is available in the ABC Pol Sci print edition: REF AI 3 .A2 (1969 - 1995).
